German Dutch Island Hopping

Between Dunes and Horizons

8 Days / 7 Nights
Easy
Two cyclists riding along a brick waterfront path with a red lightship and lighthouse in the harbor under a blue sky with white clouds.

This journey takes you to where sky and sea blend into one, and the days are guided by the rhythm of the tides. From Emden, you sail to the island of Borkum, where salty air, endless beaches, and the calls of seagulls set the scene. The route continues to Schiermonnikoog, the smallest inhabited island of the Netherlands—a peaceful haven of rolling dunes and untouched nature. Along the way, you’ll encounter the unique Wadden Sea as well as lively towns that combine maritime history with modern charm. Even in Groningen, the open expanse of the North Sea can still be felt. This journey offers moments to breathe deeply, to discover, and to simply be at ease—between coasts, cultures, and boundless freedom.

Your holiday starts in Emden, where the harbor, narrow streets, and maritime museums offer your first impressions. From there, you take the ferry to Borkum, the largest East Frisian island: for two days, you can enjoy beach walks, dune hikes, and relaxed promenade strolls. Next, you experience the tranquility of Schiermonnikoog, a car-free island full of nature, mudflats, and wide beaches – the perfect place to fully explore the unspoiled landscape.

On the way back, you cycle through the green Netherlands, visiting idyllic coastal towns and the vibrant city of Groningen, before returning to Emden via Winschoten. This creates a varied tour where island and coastal cycling, nature, and maritime charm make every day a special experience.

  • Borkum: The largest East Frisian island with endless sandy beaches, dune landscapes, and an extensive cycling network for both relaxation and activity.
  • Schiermonnikoog: The smallest inhabited Frisian island in the Netherlands, car-free, largely protected as a nature reserve, and a paradise for nature and tranquility lovers.
  • Wadden Sea & Ferries: Ferry crossings between the islands provide a sense of freedom and vastness, offering ever-changing views of the coastal landscape.
  • Culture in Groningen: The historic old town, picturesque canals, and modern architecture combine to create a lively urban atmosphere.
  • Quiet Coastal Towns: Emden, Winschoten, and small fishing villages charm with maritime flair, relaxed cafés, and Dutch coastal life.

The daily stages of this tour are easy, as the routes are mostly flat and follow well-paved cycle paths and service roads. Ferries connect the islands, allowing for relaxed island hopping without extra effort. There is plenty of time for walks, beach stays, or cultural discoveries in the coastal towns.

This tour is ideal for leisure cyclists and anyone who wants to actively experience the nature, tranquility, and expansiveness of the North Sea islands without compromising on comfort and relaxation.

Itinerary at a glance

Wide beaches, bustling port towns, and serene islands: experience the North Sea in all its variety. Between dunes, the Wadden Sea, and coastal culture, enjoy a journey that offers plenty of space for freedom and relaxation

Your journey begins in Emden. After the information session and bike handover, you’ll have time to explore the maritime harbor or visit the art museum and the charming Otto Huus.

From Emden, you board the ferry to Borkum, the largest of the East Frisian Islands. Even the crossing over the Wadden Sea evokes a sense of vastness and freedom. You’ll spend two nights on Borkum, with ample time to explore at a relaxed pace: stroll along endless sandy beaches, wander through gently rolling dunes, or enjoy the lively promenade. Leisurely bike rides and peaceful walks by the sea complete the experience.

Borkum is a cyclist’s paradise: with around 130 kilometers of cycle paths, you can explore the island’s dunes, coastline, and sea. Whether you ride energetically or take it easy with the wind at your back, you’ll fully savor the sense of freedom. Those who prefer the beach will find ample space along the island’s 28-kilometer coastline to swim, sunbathe, and unwind.

After the ferry crossing from Borkum to Eemshaven, you’re back on your bike. Passing fields and small villages, you reach the Menkemaborg water castle, a highlight of cultural history. From there, you cycle through the tranquil expanses of Groningen all the way to Lauwersoog. A ferry then takes you to Schiermonnikoog, where you’ll spend two nights surrounded by pristine nature.

The smallest inhabited Frisian island captivates with endless beaches, rolling dunes, forests, and tidal flats. Schiermonnikoog is car-free, and much of the island is a protected nature reserve—ideal for both relaxation and active exploration. A dense network of cycling and walking paths invites you to discover the island’s serene beauty at a leisurely pace.

You depart Schiermonnikoog by ferry and arrive in Lauwersoog. From there, your cycling route winds through expansive, water-lined landscapes and the quaint village of Houwerzijl. Eventually, you reach Groningen, a vibrant city of contrasts: historic old-town streets, picturesque canals, and modern architecture combine to create an exciting mix that charms both culture enthusiasts and city explorers alike.

From Groningen, you follow the well-marked junction system through peaceful landscapes and rural villages. Beyond Muntendam, the view opens over meadows and canals before you reach Winschoten. The town surprises with a historic center, quaint shops, and relaxed cafés—a charming spot that reflects the cozy side of Dutch life.

From Winschoten, you pedal through tucked-away landscapes and picturesque villages as you make your way back toward Germany. In Leer, a charming old town with maritime flair welcomes you, before you continue to the fishing village of Ditzum. A ferry then carries you to Petkum (not included in the travel price), and you cycle the final kilometers to Emden. Your journey concludes here—consider adding an extra night to savor the experience a little longer.
