Between Dunes and Horizons
Cycle through German and Dutch coastal landscapes on this easy island-hopping tour. Ferry crossings connect Borkum and Schiermonnikoog islands with mainland routes through Groningen province. Daily distances average 50-75 km on flat, well-surfaced paths. Highlights include endless beaches, the Wadden Sea, Menkemaborg water castle, and the vibrant city of Groningen. Two nights each on car-free Borkum and nature-protected Schiermonnikoog allow relaxed island exploration.
This journey takes you to where sky and sea blend into one, and the days are guided by the rhythm of the tides. From Emden, you sail to the island of Borkum, where salty air, endless beaches, and the calls of seagulls set the scene. The route continues to Schiermonnikoog, the smallest inhabited island of the Netherlands—a peaceful haven of rolling dunes and untouched nature. Along the way, you’ll encounter the unique Wadden Sea as well as lively towns that combine maritime history with modern charm. Even in Groningen, the open expanse of the North Sea can still be felt. This journey offers moments to breathe deeply, to discover, and to simply be at ease—between coasts, cultures, and boundless freedom.
The routes are mostly flat and easy to ride. You’ll primarily follow well-surfaced cycle paths, with occasional stretches along small secondary roads.
