Includes boat rides to Reichenau Island and Rhine Falls, plus museum entry in Constance.

Do you have questions about this tour?

If there’s one classic cycling destination, it’s Lake Constance. Hardly any other region welcomes as many cyclists each year as this “lake of three countries” in the heart of Europe. It is the three neighboring countries—Germany, Switzerland, and Austria—that give the lake its very special charm. This unique blend of different cultures has endowed the region with a whole host of first-rate cultural treasures, such as the World Heritage Site of Reichenau Island, the Baroque pilgrimage church at Birnau, and the historic old town of Stein am Rhein. Added to this is the magnificent landscape along the bike path, which is characterized at times by idyllic orchards, at times by the glistening water, and at times by the majestic silhouette of the Alps.

You cycle from one place to the next on this cycle tour around the Dreiländersee. The best thing about it: the Lake Constance cycle tour has two routes up its sleeve. Which of the two you choose is entirely up to you. In the first variant, the towns of Radolfzell, Überlingen, Lingen and Arbon are on the programme. Variant B makes stops in Kressbronn, Nonnenhorn, Höchst and Rorschach. The only difference between the routes lies in the daily stages covered. Want a rest? The way back to Constance is easy with a boat trip. Wonderful!

  • Friedrichshafe: You cycle through the vineyards towards the famous town of Friedrichshafen. Cultural highlights such as the baroque Wallfahrtskirche Basilika in Birnau and the Zeppelin Museum should definitely be on your programme.
  • Bregenz Festival: From Bavarian Lindau we head towards Austria. In Bregenz, the capital of Vorarlberg, the festival takes place annually on the world’s largest floating stage. Enjoy the charm of the city and let yourself be pampered by traditional Austrian cuisine!

Over eight days you cycle 235 kilometres around Lake Constance. The focus is on the natural experience and enjoyment in the regions around the Dreiländersee. Except for the first three hilly stages, the cycle route is rather flat. In other words: the cycle tour around the Swabian Sea is perfectly suitable for families. The kid’s feed need a break? Relaxation is guaranteed on the boat trip on the last section.

Itinerary at a glance

The Mainau Flower Island, the Pilgrimage Church of Birnau, and the Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen are just a few destinations at Lake Constance. Enjoy Austrian cuisine in Bregenz and conclude the tour by boat.

Enjoy a stroll through the very well maintained old town of Constance with council house, the Munster, and the maze of little alleyways of Niederburg. Not to forget the Mediterranean harbour with famous “Imperia”.

First, you cycle along the Gnadensee to the historic imperial town and current spa town of Radolfzell. From there, you cross the Bodanrück and have to overcome a very short ascent. The Überlinger See rewards you with stunning views.

The Lake Constance Cycle Path takes you along the Upper Lake to Unteruhldingen, where a visit to the famous pile dwellings is worthwhile. In Meersburg, the medieval castle towers above the lake and invites you to pause in its historic old town. Continue to Friedrichshafen, home to the Dornier and Zeppelin museums, before enjoying sweeping Alpine views from the harbor’s 22-meter observation tower.

You cycle through extensive orchards to Langenargen, where the Moorish-style Montfort Castle rises directly by the lake. Soon after, you reach the Bavarian town of Lindau. Its picturesque old town lies on an island, protected as a historic ensemble. At the harbor, a majestic six-meter-high lion guards the entrance, creating a truly memorable arrival on Lake Constance.

After just a few kilometers you reach Bregenz, the capital of Vorarlberg in Austria, famous for the annually held festival on the largest lake stage in the world. Finally, you reach Höchst, shortly afterwards cross the border again and cycle a few more kilometers further to Rorschach or Arbon.

In category B overnight stay in Rorschach/Arbon approx. 45–50 km.

Today’s stage of your tour takes you through Romanshorn with the largest Lake Constance harbor in Switzerland. You then continue along Lake Constance back to Constance. This route is flat and, except in stronger west winds, easy to manage. Again and again you pass bathing spots where you can refresh yourself in the cool water. End your day with a stroll through the old town or an ice cream at the harbor.

Along the shores of Lake Constance you reach Stein am Rhein, with its fresco-adorned medieval houses. Crossing several times between Germany and Switzerland, you arrive in the cantonal capital of Schaffhausen, overlooked by the Munot fortress and famous for its citizens competing in the construction of bay windows.

After breakfast you cycle the short distance to the Rhine Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe. Upstream you return to Stein am Rhein and then continue along the Höri peninsula. In Gaienhofen you board a boat that takes you to Reichenau Island. From there it is only a few more kilometers back to Constance. In the early evening you receive your luggage and depart individually. We will gladly extend your stay.

Enjoy a stroll through the very well maintained old town of Constance with council house, the Munster, and the maze of little alleyways of Niederburg. Not to forget the Mediterranean harbour with famous “Imperia”.

The first stage of your cycling tour takes you to Reichenau, the famous “Vegetable Island” and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. A ferry crossing brings you to Gaienhofen, from where you cycle along the scenic Höri Peninsula, once home to the renowned writer Hermann Hesse, to the charming Swiss town of Stein am Rhein with its beautifully preserved medieval old town. Leaving Lake Constance behind for a while, you then follow the course of the Rhine towards Schaffhausen. Before reaching your destination, be sure to make a detour to the Rhine Falls, one of the largest and most spectacular waterfalls in Central Europe.

Today begins with a scenic boat trip along the Upper Rhine, offering a completely different perspective of the landscape. Back on two wheels, you cycle around the Höri Peninsula and continue to the spa town of Radolfzell. Passing the wooded slopes of the Bodanrück and numerous traditional orchards, you reach Bodman and Ludwigshafen on Lake Überlingen. Following the lakeside cycle path, you soon arrive in the charming town of Überlingen, where the impressive St. Nicholas Minster can already be seen rising above the rooftops from afar.

The Lake Constance Cycle Path leads you along the shores of the Obersee to Unteruhldingen, where the famous prehistoric pile dwellings are well worth a visit. Continuing on, you reach Meersburg, a charming town known for its picturesque old quarter and impressive medieval castle, which towers high above the lake. Take a break and soak up the historic atmosphere before cycling on to Friedrichshafen. Here, the Dornier Museum and the Zeppelin Museum offer fascinating insights into aviation history. From the 22-metre-high observation tower at the harbour mole, you can enjoy sweeping views of Lake Constance and the Alpine panorama beyond.

Cycling through vast orchards, you first pass through Langenargen, home to the charming Moorish-style Montfort Castle. Soon afterwards, you reach the Bavarian town of Lindau, whose harbour is guarded by its famous six-metre-high lion statue. The historic old town, protected as a listed ensemble, is situated on an island and invites you to stroll through its picturesque streets and lively waterfront.

You should take your first break in Bregenz, where the Pfänder cable car whisks you and your children up to the summit in just a few minutes. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views across Lake Constance and can meet native Alpine animals at the Alpine Wildlife Park. After gliding comfortably back down into the valley, continue cycling along the lakeshore. Shortly after Höchst, you cross the Swiss border and soon reach the charming lakeside towns of Rorschach and Arbon.

The last day of your tour takes you through Romanshorn, home to Switzerland’s largest port on Lake Constance. Following the lakeside cycle path, you return to Konstanz on a mostly flat route that is easy to ride, except for the occasional strong westerly wind. Along the way, numerous swimming spots invite you to take a refreshing dip in the lake. Round off your journey with a stroll through Konstanz’s historic old town or enjoy an ice cream at the harbor.
