The essentials at a glance

This circular cycling tour explores Lake Constance across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Highlights include UNESCO World Heritage Reichenau Island, Rhine Falls, Mainau flower island, pile dwellings in Uhldingen, Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen, and St. Gallen's historic library. The route features boat trips, a Pfänderbahn cable car ride, and visits to medieval towns like Stein am Rhein and Meersburg. Medium difficulty level, suitable for families with enough time for sightseeing.

You will have to look around hard to find another classic cycle path that is as popular as Lake Constance. Three countries participate in the large lake in the heart of Europe. Austria, Germany and Switzerland add a special flair to the lake. This unique symbiosis of various cultures contributed a number of precious treasures of art. To mention only a few of them: Cultural heritage Island Reichenau, baroque style pilgrims church Birnau or the historic old town of Stein on Rhine. Add the marvellous countryside along the lake and a cycle path winding the way through idyllic meadows, along glittering water and in front of the stunning peaks of the Alps. This very big round combines the visit of Lake Constance with the nearby Rhine Falls. The largest waterfall in Europe offers its visitors a truly magnificent spectacle: Over a width of 150 meters and a height of 23 meters, about 700 cubic meters of water per second tumble over the rocks at average water flow of the Rhine. In addition, a view of the special treasures of Dissenhofen with its monasteries and much more worth seeing. All daily stages leave enough time for sightseeing, especially children feel particularly comfortable on this trip.

Commencing from Constance, your journey will take you to Reichenau Island, followed by a boat ride to the Höri Peninsula. You'll then travel along the Hochrhein to Gailingen. The following day, you'll explore the majestic Rhine Falls before making your way through Stein am Rhein and concluding the trip back in Constance. This exciting route includes visits to the enchanting flower island of Mainau and Radolfzell. Your adventure continues through Uhldingen and Meersburg, leading you to Friedrichshafen. Subsequently, you'll cycle through Lindau, proceed to Bregenz, and then return to Constance via St. Gallen.

  • Constance: The charming town beckons you to enjoy a relaxed walk through its historic old town. Of historical significance is the Constance Minster, with its first mention dating back to 780. Moreover, you have the opportunity to explore the Archaeological State Museum or marvel at the wonders of the underwater world at Sea Life.  
  • Rheinfall: The famous waterfall is a true attraction. Located in the canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland, it plunges from a height of 23 meters into the depths, with a width of 150 meters. When you travel by boat to the Rhine Falls rock, you can feel the power of nature. 
  • Blumeninsel "Flower Island" Mainau: This paradise island is a colorful sea of flowers with fragrant roses and giant sequoia trees. It is the third-largest island in Lake Constance. 
  • Radolfzell: This Kneipp spa town of today has roots as an ancient imperial city. It sits on the northwestern shore of Lake Constance and is definitely worth exploring.

This varied cycling tour provides ample opportunity to explore major attractions and savor delightful experiences. It's suitable for both families with children and enthusiastic cyclists, with individual stages designed to accommodate various interests and preferences.

Itinerary at a glance

Immerse yourself in the history of the region, whether it's at the Constance Cathedral, the Kneipp spa town of Radolfzell, or the pile-dwelling settlement in Uhldingen. Feel the power of nature at the Rhine Falls, and enjoy the impressive views from Pfänder near Bregenz.

Enjoy a stroll through the very well maintained old town of Constance with council house, the Munster, and the maze of little alleyways of Niederburg. Not to forget the Mediterranean harbour with famous “Imperia”. Overnight stay is in Constance.

The first highlight is Reichenau Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. You will then take a boat to the Höri Peninsula. From there, you will follow the Upper Rhine to the medieval town of Stein am Rhein, known for its many fresco-painted houses

Today you will cycle through a lovely river landscape to Schaffhausen (castle Munot). Afterwards you will visit the Rhine fall (most powerful waterfall in middle Europe).

You will pass a lot of picturesque fishing villages on your bike tour to Untersee. Overnight stay is in Constance/surroundings.

Visit the “flower island” Mainau! Afterwards you have a short bike tour via Allensbach to Radolfzell.

A lot of places of interest on your 6th day: monasteries, baroque churches and old castles. Overnight stay is in Uhldingen/Meersburg.

Today you visit baroque pilgrims church Birnau, pole-settlements in Uhldingen and then Meersburg, Hagnau and Immenstaad until you reach Friedrichshafen. Visit the Zeppelin museum and the harbour. Overnight stay is in/near Immenstaad or Friedrichshafen.

Enjoy the large fruit orchards before you reach Bavarian metropolis Lindau. Special about Lindau is the protected old town on an island. After a few kilometres you reach Austria and cycle on the lake bank into festival city Bregenz with the unique lake-stage.

In the morning, you visit the Pfänder, the local mountain of Bregenz. Then you continue by bike, cycling along the Alpine Rhine to Altstätten. From there, a train takes you up into the Appenzell region to Gais, and you cycle through picture-perfect Swiss landscapes to St. Gallen.

Today you do not need your bike, you have time to visit St. Gallen. The library of the Abbey Church is one of the most important historical libraries in the world. Among the approximately 160,000 books in its collection, is the oldest German book. You can also take a hike in the area.

You enjoy a comfortable downhill ride to Lake Constance, reaching it at Arbon. Mostly cycling directly along the lake, you pass through the towns of Arbon and Romanshorn on your way back to Constance. The route is flat and, except for strong westerly winds, easy to manage. Along the way, you’ll pass several swimming spots where you can refresh yourself in the cool water.

Lake constance bike tour: Cycling by the water's edge
The Lake Constance bike path is one of the most popular in Europe. No surprise there. At least not, for anyone who has stood on the edge of this lake and looked across the glistening water towards the Alps. Anyone who has done so will inevitably understand the charm of this fascinating landscape. A greeny-blue waterscape spreads out in front of your eyes. Waves slowly ripple along the surface with the light wind. Seagulls circle the sky, whilst you can hear frogs croaking in the grass and bees buzzing around in the sky. Every May, thousands upon thousands of irises, both bright yellow and blue, bloom in the flat reeds between Eriskirch and Langenargen. It’s exceptionally warm. After all of the snow, the grey clouds and the gloom from the last months, the sun really does give us that feel good feeling. The Lake Constance cycle path runs through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. That’s with one loop right around the lake.
