The essentials at a glance

Cycle along the Rhine from Mainz to Coblenz through the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Explore Rüdesheim's famous Drosselgasse, visit Kloster Eberbach, and climb the legendary Loreley rock. The route passes through picturesque wine villages, magnificent castles, and offers wine tasting opportunities. Daily distances average 35 km on mostly flat terrain. Highlights include the Niederwald monument, Marksburg castle, and the German Corner in Coblenz.

The Rhine flows through a variety of impressive landscapes, including picturesque wine villages, historic cities, majestic castles, and dense forests. All this and much more awaits you over five days on the route from Mainz to Koblenz. Visit one of the local winemakers and take the opportunity for a wine tasting. Castles and fortresses line the route, and a visit to the Lorelei is a must. Enjoy not only the fine wines but also the culinary specialties.

Your starting point, Mainz, is a beautiful city full of sights. After an extensive exploration, you leave Mainz and greet the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Before strolling through the Drosselgasse in Rüdesheim, plan a visit to Eberbach Abbey. The timber-framed town of Eltville is also worth a visit.

The route continues to St. Goar, passing numerous castles and palaces along the way. You will also encounter the famous Loreley rock — hike up to the viewing platform for a spectacular panorama. On the third and final stage, cycle to Boppard and Schloss Stolzenfels before bidding farewell to the Rhine at the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz.

  • Mainz, the charming city on the Rhine, captivates with the magnificent St. Martin’s Cathedral, the Gutenberg Museum, and picturesque half-timbered houses in the old town. The annual Mainz Wine Festival celebrates the local wine culture, and strolls along the Rhine promenade offer stunning views.
  • The legendary rock in the Middle Rhine: the Loreley offers fascinating vistas and a mystical atmosphere. Surrounded by vineyards and castles, the region attracts many visitors. The Loreley is particularly famous due to the legend of a beautiful, siren-like maiden who sits on the rock, distracting sailors with her singing and leading them to disaster.
  • The former Cistercian monastery in the Rheingau: Eberbach Abbey impresses with its Romanesque architecture, and lovers of fine wine can explore its historic wine cellar. The abbey was also a filming location for “The Name of the Rose.” Explore the picturesque gardens and the impressive basilica. Exciting cultural events are held here regularly.

Cycling along the Rhine is particularly enjoyable due to the beautiful landscape, nature, and well-maintained paths. The route is mostly flat, though you may have to climb a vineyard or two on the way if you stop for a wine tasting.

Even a few days are a fantastic escape from the hectic everyday life, allowing you to discover new things, enjoy culinary delights, and relax in nature. A short cycling holiday in Germany offers wonderful opportunities for sustainable relaxation.
