The essentials at a glance

Cycle through the Rhine Valley between Germany, France, and Switzerland. Discover Freiburg's charm, taste wines in Colmar, visit the world's largest automobile collection in Mulhouse, and explore Basel's art scene. The route follows flat terrain in the Rhine plain with slightly hilly sections along the French wine route and Sundgau. Daily distances average 35-60 km on bike paths and quiet side roads through Alsatian villages, vineyards, and historic towns.

Three countries, three cultures and a wonderful mild climate awaits you in the Rhine valley between the Alps, Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains. The picturesque city of Freiburg is the starting point for our tour. At the Rhine knee you can enjoy one of the most beautiful and well preserved mediaeval old towns in Europe. The Rhine passes through beautiful natural landscapes, the impressive mountain ranges of the Black Forest, always firmly in view of the Baden wine route and Freiburg with its picturesque old town. On the other side of the Rhine, Colmar is waiting, the capital of Alsace wines.. At the foot of the Vosges Mountains, you cycle along the French wine route, through dreamy villages with many Alsatian timber-frame houses and almost perfectly preserved mediaeval town centres. The area around the colourful town Hall in Mulhouse, , is dominated by the architectural diversity from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Gründerzeit and modern times. At the „Rhine-knee“ you will enjoy one of the most beautiful and best kept medieval old towns of Europe:in Basel.

With a view of the cathedral, you bid farewell to charming Freiburg after your initial city tour—don't worry, you'll revisit it in eight days! You'll cycle across the Rhine, gradually being welcomed by vineyards and winemakers. Eventually, you’ll arrive at the picturesque French Wine Route!

After Colmar, you’ll explore Guebwiller, Ungersheim, and Mulhouse. The charming centers of these towns enchant not only with their wine taverns but also with their half-timbered houses and medieval architecture. On Day 5, you’ll switch to the Rhine-Rhône Canal and soon cross into Switzerland. Your destination is Basel, which welcomes you with its vibrant urban atmosphere and diverse cultural scene after the tranquil villages. The route then leads you back to Freiburg via Müllheim and Bad Krozingen.

  • Wine meets culture in Colmar: The city charms with its picturesque half-timbered houses, flower-decked canals, and historic allure. Highlights include the Unterlinden Museum, the half-timbered Koifhus town hall, St. Martin's Church, and the charming district of Little Venice.
  • The Vibrant City of Basel on the Rhine: Basel’s cityscape will surely captivate you with its fascinating blend of old and new. Art enthusiasts can visit the renowned Kunstmuseum Basel, which features works by artists such as Picasso and Rembrandt. The modern architecture of Messeplatz and the Roche Tower provides a striking contrast to the historic backdrop. Day
01

Arrival in Freiburg

The Breisach Cathedral towers imposingly over the bank of the Rhine. You cross the Rhine here to
Neuf-Brisach in Alsace, a 17th century, octagonal fortified town. The day ends wonderfully in beautiful Colmar, one of the most delightful cities on the French wine route.

From Colmar we follow the French wine route. The dreamy wine-growing villages, with many Alsatian timber-frame houses, and magnificent mediaeval town centres in the midst of extensive vineyards are areas for unwinding, enjoyment and simply relaxing. One of the highlights will be the Murbach Monastery, which was one of the richest and most influential in the Holy Roman Empire.

From Guebwiller you’re cycling to Ungersheim and passing Ecomusée d’Alsace, which represents an Alsatian village from the early 20th century. From here the cycle path leads directly to Mulhouse and its varied old town.  The largest automobile collection in the world and the Rail & Electricity Museum will inspire everyone, not just technology fans!

The cycle Path brings you along the Rhône along the cycling route "EuroVelo 6" to Illfurth and through the tranquil Sundgau. This region in the extreme south of Alsace is characterized by its beautiful half-timbered farmhouses, the many ponds and shimmering landscapes. Finally, you will reach the Swiss city of Basel, which shines with its strong artistic identity and high-quality cultural offerings. Overnight stay near Basel in France or Germany.

When you leave Basel, follow the bike paths to the north, parallel to the Rhine. You will reach Müllheim, where you can visit the Markgräfler Museum and the church of St. Martin with its 14th century frescoes. From Müllheim, Badenweiler is very easy to reach: its castle and Roman thermal remains are worth a detour.

After the visit to the Villa Urbana and the Malteserschloss in Heitersheim, we head into the Breisgau. In the treasure chest of Bad Krozingen, the mineral and thermal springs await you, before the day fades away in Freiburg, the gateway to the Black Forest.
