Windmill on the Rhine

The Rhine is a constant companion on many of our Eurobike tours, and this time, your journey takes you to explore the Netherlands. Encompassing just over 200 kilometers, you'll travel from Arnhem to Rotterdam. Along this picturesque route, you'll not only trace the river's course but also come across enchanting windmills, expansive heaths, and historic cities. Upon arrival at your destination, an impressive harbor awaits, serving as the departure point for ships destined for global destinations. Furthermore, Rotterdam features a charming old town, exceptional dining establishments, and cultural highlights.

Shortly after Arnhem, you'll reach Veluwezoom, the oldest national park in Holland. Observe deer and enjoy the panoramic views from Posbank before reaching your stage destination, Wijk bij Duurstede.

Leerdam is not only known for its fine cheese, and with Dordrecht, you'll explore the oldest city in the Netherlands. Along the way, you'll pass through the National Park De Biesbosch. The final stage takes you first to the windmills of Kinderdijk and ultimately to Rotterdam. Conclude your vacation with a traditional meal and some sightseeing.

  • Picturesque Gorinchem: Gorinchem has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. The city walls and bastions bear witness to its historical significance as a fortress town. A stroll along the city walls provides beautiful views of the old town and its surroundings.
  • Expansive national parks: The Veluwezoom, as the oldest national park in the Netherlands, covers an area of around 50 square kilometers. The landscape is characterized by forests, heathlands, sand dunes, and river meadows. Enjoy the nature surrounding the well-laid-out cycling paths.
  • The vibrant Rotterdam: A long and tumultuous history shapes this port city, which suffered heavy destruction during the Second World War. Subsequently, Rotterdam was rebuilt with a modern touch, and the innovative architecture continues to define the cityscape to this day.

The Netherlands is famously flat, and this applies to your route along the Rhine as well. Four stages ranging from 35 to 65 kilometers make it easily manageable even for casual cyclists without major effort. This is partly due to the excellent route planning, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding regions. For a relaxed vacation, we provide our guests with the option to use rental bikes. For a fee, we provide you with a well-maintained and high-quality bicycle for the duration of your journey.

The Rhine Cycle Path offers countless highlights, whether in Switzerland, France, Germany, or the Netherlands. On our website, we have compiled a wealth of interesting information about this diverse route.

Itinerary at a glance

From Arnhem, you'll cycle along the Dutch Rhine, passing through the gardens of Amerongen Castle, the Betuwe fruit region, and the windmills of Kinderdijk. In addition to Rotterdam, cities like Leerdam and Gorinchem also invite you for a leisurely stroll.

Plenty of parks invite you to stroll and linger. Shopping fans will get their money's worth in the popular shopping district. The city has an eventful history, as evidenced by the impressive memorials and monuments.

The cycle stage passes through Holland's oldest national park: Veluwezoom is a hilly landscape characterised by extensive forests and heathland. Historic country houses and old farms line the route. In contrast, fertile floodplains stretch south of the Rhine. You have reached your destination for the day in Wijk bij Duurstede. Many historical and cultural sights await you in this town on the Lower Rhine.

Today you leave the Lower Rhine. The route first takes you to picturesque Buren, the pearl of the Betuwe region. You continue to Leerdam. The tasty cheese is known far beyond its borders. The stage destination is the fortified town of Gorinchem. Situated on the banks of the rivers Linge, Merwede and Waal, Gorinchem is a picture-book Dutch town.

On this cycling stage, you will cross De Biesbosch National Park. A labyrinth of streams and small rivers stretches across more than 8,000 hectares. This unique natural paradise is a wonderful place to slow down. Dordrecht is the oldest city in Holland. The numerous monuments in the city centre bear witness to its historical past. Just a short distance and you will have completed today's stage in Papendrecht.

The picturesque windmills of Kinderdijk are today's highlight. The historic museum mills are a journey back to the 18th century. A postcard motif par excellence! In contrast to this is Rotterdam, the trendy and cool harbour metropolis. Modernisation is the focus here, and the skyline changes almost daily. Whether shopping, cosy dining, museum visits or simply strolling around: You will certainly not be bored in Rotterdam.

Your cycling holiday ends after breakfast. You start your journey home with a wealth of impressions. We are happy to book an extension to your stay in Rotterdam. Optional return journey with our cycle bus to Arnhem.
