The essentials at a glance

Family-friendly cycling tour along the Lech River from Steeg through Austria and Bavaria to Augsburg. The route follows well-maintained bike paths and quiet roads, mostly downhill from Steeg to Füssen, then gently rolling to Augsburg. Highlights include traditional Tyrolean villages with Lüftlmalerei, the famous castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, Forggensee and Lechsee, the ancient Roman road Via Claudia, and Augsburg's historic Fuggerei and old town. Medium difficulty suitable for children with good fitness and cycling skills.

In the heart of the Vorarlberg mountains, enjoy a relaxed ride through a picture-perfect landscape full of discoveries: vibrant meadows, sparkling mountain streams, and charming alpine villages. The pristine Lech River accompanies you like a faithful friend, inviting frequent pauses along its banks. In Tirol and later in Bavaria, the terrain softens as the mountains give way to the green Alpine foothills. In Füssen, the fairy-tale castles inspire awe and wonder, while Schongau, with its historic old town, reveals fascinating stories from centuries past. Continue along the Lech to Landsberg, with its enchanting medieval streets, before arriving in Augsburg—a city full of intriguing architecture and the famous Fuggerei, almost like a town within a town.

Starting point of your cycling holiday for families is the idyllic Lech Valley. Gentle paths lead you past colourful flower meadows, sparkling mountain streams, and charming Alpine villages – a place where children can explore nature in a playful way. As the route continues, the terrain becomes smoother, while the River Lech accompanies you like a loyal companion through Tyrol and Bavaria. The fairy-tale royal castles near Füssen and the historic old town of Schongau provide exciting variety before Landsberg am Lech, with its medieval flair, and Augsburg, with its famous Fuggerei, form an atmospheric finale.

  • Tiroler Lech Nature Park: The last wild river in the Northern Limestone Alps impresses with untouched nature and a diverse range of flora and fauna – a paradise for young explorers.
  • Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau Castles: Children’s eyes light up at the sight of these fairy-tale castles, while adults enjoy the magnificent architecture and fascinating stories from the past.
  • Swimming fun around Füssen: Lakes such as the Alpsee or the Forggensee invite you to take a refreshing break – perfect for splashing around, skipping stones, or simply relaxing.
  • Augsburg Puppenkiste: This traditional marionette theatre delights both young and old and offers a cultural highlight to round off the tour.

The cycling route is designed to be family-friendly: flat paths alternate with short climbs, daily stages range from 20 to 50 km, and the entire route follows well-developed cycle paths. Along the way, numerous stops invite you to play, discover, and marvel – from the Roman Museum in Epfach to the pilgrimage church in Vilgertshofen. Comfortable accommodation ensures relaxed evenings, while children can experience the nature and culture along the Lech in a playful way.
