Family at Lech-cycle path along landscape

In the heart of the Vorarlberg mountains, you cycle leisurely through a picture-book landscape where children have plenty to discover: colorful flower meadows, sparkling mountain streams, and charming alpine villages. The pristine River Lech accompanies you like a faithful friend, inviting you again and again to pause along its banks. In Tyrol, and later in Bavaria, the route becomes gentler as the mountains give way to the rolling green foothills of the Alps. In Füssen, the fairy-tale royal castles make children’s eyes light up, while Schongau’s historic old town tells exciting stories from times long past. The journey continues along the Lech to Landsberg, with its unmistakable medieval charm. Finally, Augsburg awaits you at the end – a city full of fascinating architecture and home to the famous Fuggerei, almost like a little town within the town.

Itinerary at a glance

A family-friendly cycling tour along the Lech: gentle paths, exciting stops, and fairy-tale castles. Children discover nature and history in a playful way, while Augsburg – with its colorful old town and the famous Fuggerei – provides a charming finale.

Enjoy your first few hours in the idyllic Lech Valley and explore the natural cheese dairy or the Aqua Nova indoor swimming pool.

From the pretty village of Steeg, you drive through flowering meadows past Holzgau, where colourfully painted houses with historic Lüftlmalerei frescoes characterise the traditional village landscape. Elbigenalp, the geographical centre of the Lech Valley, is the stronghold of traditional woodcarving, and in Häselgehr, the parish church is well worth a visit before you reach the tranquil village of Stanzach in the midst of a fantastic mountain world.

After a few kilometres, you will reach the Lechzopf, followed by an impressive suspension bridge that swings over the river and tempts daredevils to cross it. An idyllic quarry pond with picnic facilities invites you to take a break before crossing the border into Bavaria. Before the famous Lechfall, a treetop walk with magnificent views awaits you, before you are welcomed to Füssen with its historic flair.

Today, you will cycle into the world of Bavaria's fairy-tale king. Even from a distance, children will spot Neuschwanstein Castle, which towers high above the valley like something out of a picture book. Right next to it is Hohenschwangau Castle, which tells exciting stories from times gone by. At the idyllic Alpsee lake, you can take a break, skip stones across the water or simply enjoy the magnificent view.

From Füssen, follow a well-maintained cycle path along the shimmering Forggensee lake. Soon, wide meadows and fields open up, and the route is pleasantly flat, making it ideal for children. At Lechsee lake, take a break on the shore to play and relax. In Schongau, end the day in the charming old town or in a cosy beer garden.

Hotel (example): Rössle

From Schongau, the route follows the Lech River along easy-to-ride cycle paths. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and marvel at the sights: the Roman Museum in Epfach brings history to life in a playful way, while the pilgrimage church in Vilgertshofen surprises visitors with its colourful paintings. In Landsberg am Lech, you can explore the lively old town with its winding streets and plenty of space to discover.

Hotel (example): Landhotel Endhart

From Landsberg, you first cycle via Kaufering on a particularly well-preserved section of the old Roman road Via Claudia – an exciting experience for children too. The route continues via Königsbrunn and Friedberg to Augsburg. Here, the Fuggerei awaits with its narrow streets and courtyards, which resemble a miniature town. Numerous buildings make Augsburg the crowning glory of this stage.

Difficulty level

Medium

Mainly on cycle paths or quiet side roads. It tends to be downhill from Steeg to Füssen, with smaller inclines. It is slightly hilly between Füssen and Landsberg. It alternates between asphalted paths and longer sections on gravel paths. For children we recommend a good basic level of fitness and good cycling skills (including safety in traffic).
