The essentials at a glance

Explore Alsace on this star-route cycling tour based in Colmar and Osthouse. Cycle through famous wine villages like Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr, and Eguisheim, visit Strasbourg's Gothic cathedral and La Petite France quarter, and discover the Munster Valley. Daily distances range from 25-70 km on cycle paths and low-traffic roads. Two stages feature gentle hills. Experience the Alsatian Ried wetlands and cross the Rhine to Germany, visiting Lahr before returning via Rhinau.

Our tour takes you right into the heart of the Alsatian wine country and to one of the prettiest cities of the wine route, the picturesque Colmar. Every day you will experience the diversity of this beautiful region, visiting the pearls of the Alsatian Wine Route – Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr, Kaysersberg and the ancient German and French fortresses of Breisach and Neuf-Brisach. Furthermore, you will explore the famous cities Strasbourg, and Mulhouse conveniently.

In a stunning location, you’ll spend your first nights in the picturesque town of Colmar during the eight-day exploration of Alsace. Enjoy the historic architecture, which you'll also encounter on your first excursion to the villages along the Wine Route. Depending on the route, you'll cycle through Riquewihr, Kientzheim, Turckheim, and Eguisheim. From Neuf-Brisach, you'll ride through the Hardt Forest to Mulhouse, where a museum visit and city tour are a must. The stage through the Alsatian Ried and Sélestat includes a change of hotels.

On Day 5, Strasbourg awaits as a highlight of your journey. First, you'll pedal along the Rhône-Rhine Canal. The following day, you’ll cycle along the Alsace Wine Route to the charming town of Obernai. Stop in beautiful wine villages like Barr and Andlau to taste the regional wines. Nature in its purest form awaits on the final stage through the Rhine Valley, which is dotted with marshlands. Near Lahr, the familiar vineyards return. Set your sights on the Black Forest and look forward to the ferry ride to Rhinau.

  • Tradition and modernity in Strasbourg: The city captivates with its stunning Gothic cathedral, the picturesque old town of Petite France, and charming half-timbered houses. Enjoy a boat ride along the canals and visit the European Parliament. Narrow streets, unique boutiques, and cozy cafés define the Krutau district, where you’ll also discover a vibrant display of street art, with colorful graffiti that adds a modern, creative touch to the neighborhood's charm.
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site in Neuf-Brisach: Due to its historical and architectural significance, Neuf-Brisach was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, as part of the "Vauban Fortifications." The fortress was designed by the renowned architect Vauban in the late 17th century, commissioned by the French King Louis XIV.
  • Mulhouse charms with its delightful center, industrial heritage, colorful façades, and impressive museums, such as the Automobile Museum and the Cité du Train. Stroll through the old town, visit the Place de la Réunion, and savor the flavors of Alsatian cuisine.

Cycling in Alsace can only be described as a delight – cozy wine taverns alternate with charming eateries and top-notch restaurants. The route through the vineyards can be hilly at times, but the bike paths are well-maintained. Since you'll only change hotels once, you’ll be spared the hassle of daily packing and can fully immerse yourself in exploring each destination.

The region is famous for its exquisite wines, vineyard-covered landscapes, and charming historic wine villages – but don't be shy to explore beyond the vineyards; a cycling journey through Alsace is filled with delightful surprises waiting to be discovered!

Itinerary at a glance

The picturesque Colmar serves as your base for excursions in Alsace, known for its wine production. You'll cycle along the panoramic route to Strasbourg, following the Rhine canal and passing through swamp forests towards Rhinau.

Arrival to Colmar, check-in at the hotel and free tour of the town.

On the short version you will leave Colmar heading north through Houssen and ride to Ribeauvillé, Hunawihr, Riquewihr and Kientzheim The longer variant takes you further through the beautiful wine villages, notably Turckheim and Eguisheim.

Today you take the direction of Munster by Turckheim and Zimmerbach. The green valley of Munster is famous for its cheese of the same name, one of the many culinary emblems of the region. Enjoy it with caraway seeds and a glass of Pinot Gris or Gewurtztraminer. A pure delight! You will return to Colmar by the bicycle path that winds through the valley.

Today you change your hotel and cycle on the canal cycle path to Marckolsheim on the Rhine and cross the Alsatian Ried, an area bordered by the Ill and Rhine and criss-crossed by numerous watercourses. The stage can be shortened by a train ride (on your own) to Sélestat.

On an asphalt cycle path along the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, you will cycle northward to Strasbourg. The cycle path ends at the 17th century Barrage Vauban. From its panoramic terrace, you have an amazing view of the old city, which you can explore via bicycle or on foot. Strasbourg owns one of France’s unique networks of cycle paths. The picturesque neighborhood “La petite France” and the magnificent Gothic cathedral are only some of the many great treasures you will come across in Strasbourg. Single-handedly you can shorten the route and take the train (optional, bikes are allowed for free).

On the return you have the choice to visit other beautiful wine villages on the wine route, such as Mittelbergheim, Andlau, Itterswiller and Nothalten, or to shorten your itinerary to the flowered village of Stotzheim. From the many rural villages along the way, the larger city of Benfeld will be an impressive change.

This route takes you east through marshlands to the creator of this beautiful flat landscape: the Rhine. Via a large lock complex you will cycle on its other side in Germany.
