From the medieval city of Bayeux, set off by bike to explore the D-Day Landing Beaches. Ride along quiet country lanes and coastal roads, passing through beautiful landscapes and historic sites. Between the iconic Omaha Beach and the charming harbour of Port-en-Bessin, be sure to visit the dramatic cliffs of Pointe du Hoc and the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Take time, too, to wander through the picturesque seaside villages. A visit to Caen offers yet more memorable moments, with its lively port, impressive abbeys, and the renowned Mémorial de Caen.

Whether in Alsace, Provence, or along the Loire – a cycling vacation through France is always scenic, enjoyable, and an opportunity to create lasting memories. Learn more about this charming travel destination on our pages.

Your vacation begins in the picturesque town of Carentan, with its charming canals and timber-framed houses—an area with a rich history, as it was the site of the D-Day landings. Your cycling adventure starts with a loop tour through the marshes of the Cotentin, taking you to Sainte-Mère-Église and Utah Beach, where the Allies landed during World War II. Your next destination is the beautiful fishing port of Port-en-Bessin, passing through quaint villages and coastal stretches filled with historical landmarks along the way.

In Arromanches, the Americans built an artificial harbor—take a moment to explore it before cycling through the agricultural landscapes of the "Bocage" on your way to Courseulles-sur-Mer. On Day 5, highlights include Juno Beach, Sword Beach, and the iconic Pegasus Bridge over the Caen Canal. Your day’s destination is the charming seaside town of Cabourg. As you continue along the stunning Côte Fleurie, you’ll first reach the artistic town of Honfleur, famous for its colorful houses and picturesque harbor. In this region, you’ll likely encounter local specialties like cheese, cider, and Calvados, especially as you head towards your final stop, Trouville. Don’t miss the fish market—a delightful culinary highlight to end your journey.

  • Spectacular WWII monuments and landmarks: Much of your route serves as a poignant reminder of the time when the Allies landed in France, including the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Overlooking Omaha Beach, rows upon rows of white marble crosses stand as solemn tributes to the fallen. A fascinating insight into this chapter of history is provided by the Arromanches 360 Cinema, which vividly recounts the events of the battle.
  • Maritime flair and culinary delights on the Norman coast: Trouville and its neighboring town Deauville are elegant seaside resorts, boasting beautiful beaches, architecturally striking villas, and lively promenades. Enjoy the fresh sea breeze, explore the local markets, and let the peaceful atmosphere and coastal charm captivate you.
  • The beauty of the flower coast: The Côte Fleurie is a picturesque stretch of coastline along the English Channel. This stunning region, extending from the mouth of the Seine at Honfleur to Merville-Franceville-Plage, is marked by charming seaside resorts, elegant beach towns, and flourishing landscapes. In spring and summer, the abundance of blooming flowers is especially enchanting.

The coastal routes of Normandy feature some challenging climbs, offering breathtaking views in return for a good effort on the pedals. Our local team will handle your luggage transfers and is readily available to assist with any questions or concerns. Each day, you’ll ride up to 60 kilometers, with plenty of opportunities to pause and discover the region’s historical and scenic treasures.

Itinerary at a glance

Experience the history of the Second World War up close on the Normandy coast. In contrast to the terrifying battlefields of the past, the present offers beautiful natural landscapes and architecture.

Wander through the narrow streets of Bayeux and admire the stately merchant houses. Visit the cathedral of Notre Dame, a jewel of Romanesque architecture.

Bike to Vierville-sur-Mer and Omaha Beach, often called ‘bloody Omaha’ as the heaviest allied losses were suffered here. At the top of the cliff the American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer dominates the beach. Row upon row of headstones surrounded by emerald green grass and the ever present sea create a sense of peace and serenity. Return to Bayeux after a visit to the Overlord Museum or extend the circuit by visiting La Pointe du Hoc cliffs. You can still easily see traces of the damage caused to the fields by shell fire from the allied ships in the channel.

Head towards Longues-sur-Mer and its impressive German defensive battery, then continue on towards Gold Beach and, of course, Arromanches, Here you’ll be able to see the remains of the enormous artificial port constructed on the orders of Winston Churchill. Don’t forget to visit Arromanches 360°, a circular cinema which graphically illustrates the complete history of the Battle for Normandy. Continue your ride through the Normandy countryside, biking down little lanes between the pretty hedged fields – the “bocage”- until you reach Courseulles-sur-Mer. Take time to stroll round the picturesque fishing harbour.

Cycle past small coastal villages and fine sandy beaches to the port of Ouistreham and on to Juno Beach and Sword Beach. Visit either the No. 4 Commando Museum, which tells the story of the French-British forces' landing, or follow the cycle path along the Caen Canal to Pegasus Bridge, where the British Army won a significant victory in 1944. Don't forget to enjoy the charm of Caen with its small harbour in the middle of the city, its castle and its imposing double monastery.

For your last stage, leave Caen to the unmissable Caen memorial, a museum dedicated to the battle for Normandy, 20th century history and peace. Proceed to the château de Fontaine-Henry, a magnificent Renaissance property that has remained in the same family for the past 800 years. It boasts among the highest castle roofs in France! Continue on exploring the lovely views of the Seulles valley with its small bocage roads which criss-cross this appealing livestock farming country, then arrive in Bayeux.
