Bremen - Kiel

From river Weser to Kiel.

The coast of Germany boarders on the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Weser and Kiel Canal will lead you from Bremen to Kiel. You will feel the nearness of the Sea in the landscapes in-between, if you see the big ships in the harbours, the locks in the canals or the Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven. The boundlessness also affects on the country and the inhabitants. The desire for freedom becomes manifested in the towns, villages and fields. Forget about the necessity of everyday life. This journey will help you!

Information about the Kiel Canal

Amazement, fascination, and dreams about a carefree luxury life, itchy feet – as soon as a passenger ship is passing the Kiel Canal, every landsman is excited. Like swimming palaces the ships are gliding through the water, shimmering white during the day, festive enlightened in the dark. Wonderful places can be found everywhere along the Canal. Walking paths, ferry terminals, bridges, Watergates and restaurants and cafes with canal view are awaiting its visitors. And of course the transporter bridge to welcome the ships. All ships are welcomed with their flags and national anthem here.

Welcome briefing and distribution of rental bikes (if booked). Discover the historic old city of Bremen.

Variant 80 km: You follow Weser cycle path to the north through Lemwerder, Elsfleth, Brake and Nordenham. By ferry you go to Bremerhaven (harbour, Maritime Museum). Your route takes you along the river Weser (about 90 km) or take a more direct route (70 km).

Enjoy the colourful and lively impressions on your bike route today. You cycle on asphalted roads through the land of Wursten before you reach Cuxhaven, the well-known harbour city. The mudflats belong to two national parks and are part of the UNSECO world natural heritage.

You cross river Elbe by ferry. The houses of the old town are as worth seeing as the impressive locks at the Kiel Canal.

You can follow the 3,2 km long “blue line” in Rendsburg, where you can visit up to 30 cultural institutions and sights. The installation to salute the ships on the canal is also worth seeing.

Follow the charming canal path to the south side of the canal until Kiel. The town is the gate to Scandinavia with its Swedish and Norway dock!

Pleasant Cycle Route
Cuxhaven-Brunsbuttel ferry company went bankrupt and Ruckenwind came up with an alternate plan by driving clients to Gluckstadt who then cycled the Elbe Bike Route to Brunsbuttel. Rental bike was well fitted -- suitable size for height. Accommodations were spacious and breakfast choices were plentiful. Actual cycling mileage was longer than described but thankfully route was flat. Cyclists do not actually ride along the canal the entire way. Cities/towns were great places to visit; good restaurants for dinner.
