Small boat in the Spreewald

The Spreewald is one of the most fascinating landscapes in Europe. Countless natural water arms wind through vast meadows and forests and pass through picturesquevillages. Explore the beauty and uniqueness of the region up close on a bicycle! The extensive network of cycle paths and the flat routes invite you to leisurely cycling. This bike tour takes you on the Gurkenradweg through the Upper and Lower Spree Forest. From the university town of Cottbus you will cycle through the Spreewald, which is often called the "Venice of the North". The unique landscape with its dense forests around the small and large water arms of the Spreewald will inspire you. The adjacent pond landscapes invite you to individual detours from the Gurkenradweg during your bike tours.

Before exploring the beauty of the Spreewald by bicycle, begin your holiday with a visit to the university town of Cottbus. On the way to Lübbenau, consider stopping at the Stork Center or the Gherkin Museum in Lehde to discover the region’s famous pickled gherkins. A scenic detour into the Lower Spreewald winds along a river loop to Golßen and continues to your day’s destination, Lübben.

On Day 4, breathtaking views await from the observation tower in the Krausnicker Mountains and along the sparkling Köthener See. The picturesque village of Burg is a quintessential Spreewald stop, ideal for a leisurely break and a stroll through traditional streets.

The final day takes you through the Peitz Pond Landscape, an exceptionally idyllic region teeming with unique flora and fauna. This serene network of ponds and waterways offers a perfect finale to a cycling journey that blends nature, culture, and local charm.

  • Must-See Sights in Charming Cottbus: Climb the Spremberger Tower for stunning views over the city, and explore the Old Market and historic old town, where well-preserved buildings invite a leisurely stroll. Discover fascinating exhibitions at the Diesel Power Museum (Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk) and the Pückler Museum in Branitz Palace. The modern university campus, including its library, is also a must-see.
  • A Highlight in the Krausnicker Mountains is the view from Wehlaberg. On clear days, enjoy sweeping panoramas of the surrounding landscape, including the nearby Spreewald waterways. The famous Tropical Islands theme park is also here — one of Europe’s largest tropical adventure parks, housed in a former airship hangar.
  • The Peitz Pond Landscape is one of Europe’s largest contiguous pond regions, spanning about 1,600 hectares. It features numerous artificial fish ponds, most created in the 16th century for carp farming. Fishery has a long-standing tradition here, and the ponds are still actively used for fish breeding today.

The Gherkin Cycle Path stretches roughly 260 kilometers (162 miles) through the Spreewald. The route is well-maintained and pleasantly flat, winding through charming villages and historic towns such as Lübbenau, Lübben, Burg, and Cottbus. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of sights, including traditional gherkin farms, museums, and protected nature reserves. In the picturesque village of Burg, we’ll treat you to an ice cream—alongside classic flavors, you can even try the local specialty: gherkin ice cream! And speaking of specialties, admission to the Gherkin Museum in Lehde is included in your travel package.

Embark on a cycling holiday through central Germany, where, beyond the Spree, numerous rivers and lakes are waiting to be discovered.

Itinerary at a glance

Cycle through dense forests and along the waterways of the Spree on the Gherkin Cycle Path. Visit the White Stork Center in Vetschau, explore the charming village of Burg, and enjoy the green oasis of Cottbus, including highlights like Branitz Landscape Park.

Welcome to Cottbus, the “green city.” Highlights include the world-famous Branitz Landscape Park, designed by Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, the scenic Spreeauen Park, and the city’s charming zoo.

Today’s stage takes you to Lübbenau, where you can discover a charming old town. On the way, a stop in Vetschau is worthwhile to visit the White Stork Center. In Lehde, a protected Spreewald village, Germany’s one-of-a-kind Gherkin Museum offers fascinating insights into the region’s gherkin-growing traditions. Also worth a visit is the Lehde Open-Air Museum, which brings to life everyday Spreewald culture of the 19th century. Continue cycling to Lübbenau, where the picturesque old town awaits.

Follow the Gherkin Cycle Path from Lübbenau to Lübben, then into the western Lower Spreewald. A scenic loop through Golßen brings you back to Lübben, your destination for the day. In Golßen, a stop at the Spreewaldhof Gherkin Factory Farm Shop is highly recommended.

Enjoy a loop tour through the Lower Spreewald, immersing yourself in nature and active relaxation. From Lubolz, northwest of Lübben, the route takes you to Krausnick with its historic Kreuzkirche. Nearby, the Wehlaberg, at 144 meters (472 feet), is the highest point of the Krausnicker Mountains. From the wooden observation tower, take in sweeping panoramic views over the Spreewald. Passing Köthener See and cycling through Groß Wasserburg, you’ll continue past several pond groups before returning to Lübben.

Conclude your cycling tour by exploring the picturesque village of Burg. Established as a scattered settlement in the 6th century, it is the largest village in Germany by area. Treat yourself to a local specialty “quark–linseed oil ice cream” or “gherkin ice cream,” which we’re delighted to invite you to try in Burg.

On this stage, you cycle back to Cottbus through the Peitz Pond Landscape. Covering around 1,000 hectares (2,470 acres), this pond-rich region is home to numerous wildlife and plant species, some of which are endangered.
