Around the Lakes Müritz and Plau

7 Days / 6 Nights
Medium
On the banks of the Müritz

The Mecklenburg Lake District enchants with its idyllic scenery of over 1,000 clear lakes, lush forests, and intriguing cultural landmarks. Well-developed cycle paths wind through charming villages, past historic castles, and along untouched shores. The Müritz National Park is especially notable for its abundant wildlife and serene, peaceful bays. This region provides ideal conditions for leisurely cycling tours and invites you to unwind in its unique, water-rich landscape.

A stroll through the charming old town of Waren is a must, as you’ll be spending your first night here. Right at the start, you’ll cycle through the Müritz National Park, a true highlight, and then you’ll reach Neustrelitz, a picturesque residential town. At the Wesenberg Lake Cross, the many different yet interconnected bodies of water create a fascinating spectacle.

On the way to Röbel, stop at the Mirow Castle Island to visit the 3-Königinnen-Palais (3 Queens Palace). On day five, you’ll move from the Müritz to Lake Plau, which is just as beautiful yet distinct. Visit the brown bears and learn about agriculture in the region at the Agroneum. You pass the Schwinzer Heide and the beautiful Malchow and return to Waren via the Müritz circular route. Stop off at Klink Castle and round off your vacation on the lakeside terrace.

  • The beautiful nature of the Müritz National Park: The area spans approximately 322 square kilometers and encompasses Müritz, Germany's largest inland body of water, along with numerous smaller lakes, dense forests, moors, and wetlands. Why not try a water sport—perhaps a canoe adventure?
  • The special architecture on Mirow Castle Island: The island is known for the baroque Mirow Castle, built in the 18th century. It impresses with its magnificent architecture and historical significance as the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Don't just admire the castle; also visit the impressive St. John's Church. Its stunning interior design and the wonderful view from its tower are not to be missed.
  • The Agroneum open-air museum is dedicated to the agricultural history and rural culture of the region. It features numerous historical buildings, agricultural machinery, and equipment, offering a comprehensive insight into agricultural history. Particularly impressive are the exhibitions of historical tractors and combine harvesters, showcasing the technical development in agriculture.

The cycle paths around the Müritz and Lake Plau run almost exclusively through the countryside. Enjoy the peace and quiet and breathe in the fresh air—the flora and fauna are truly impressive. With these views, you can easily cover the 40 to 60-kilometre stages. Only occasionally will you pass through a picturesque village or small town.

In northern Germany, excellently developed cycle routes converge with stunning waters and unique natural landscapes. Learn more about our cycle tours in northern Germany and experience the wonderful routes yourself on a vacation with Eurobike.

Itinerary at a glance

The landscape of the Mecklenburg Lake District is complemented by meadows, forests, villages, and small islands in the countless waters. At Plauer See, you can visit brown bears, and on Mirow Castle Island, you'll find the Three Queens' Palace.

The region around Waren and Lake Müritz is one of the most heavily visited tourist areas in the Mecklenburg Lake District. There are numerous cafés, restaurants and shops to linger in between the Old Town and harbour.

The first part of the tour takes you through Müritz National Park. Cycle through stretches of forest, along marshes and meadows, on your way to Neustrelitz. Neustrelitz was once the home of the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

You may want to take some time to explore the town before continuing on to today’s destination. The market square and castle gardens are definitely worth seeing. Cycle along the many small lakes on your way to the south of Wesenberg near the Havel-Müritz Canal.

Cycle along the edge of Müritz National Park over rolling hills on your way back to Lake Müritz. Röbel lies south of the lake. On your way there, you will encounter several prehistoric giant burial mounds. Röbel is an old craftsman and farming town.

Today you will cycle to Lake Plau. Stone graves and burial mounds dot the landscape. It would be well worth your time to visit the village church with its famous wooden carved altar. Brown bears live here in large forest enclosures. Cycle west of Lake Plau to the town of Plau, an old trade city.

Cycle west of the lake to Karow. In 1963, several buildings were transformed into an agricultural museum in Alt Schwerin. There, you can look into the past and see what village life used to be like in Mecklenburg. Continue along the Schwinzer Heath to Malchow. Further the tour takes you through vast landscape south of the “Upper Lakes” and back to Lake Müritz. Cycle through vacation country called ‘Land Fleesensee’. In the tranquil harbour town of Sietow you will reach the circular route around Lake Müritz. Take the route to the castle, ‘Waren Schloss Klink’. You may want to go or a swim before returning your rental bike in Waren.
