Experience the enchanting allure of the Algarve, Portugal’s spectacular coastline. Delight in the luxurious comforts of two exquisite hotels in Faro and Tavira while immersing yourself in the diverse wonders this breathtaking region has to offer. Discover the dramatic cliffs of the “Rocky Algarve” in the west, and the captivating charm of the “Sandy Algarve” to the east, where the Ria Formosa Nature Park unveils its offshore islands, miles of pristine sandy beaches, and awe-inspiring natural beauty. Each day, the perfect fusion of relaxation, vibrant culture, and lush landscapes will leave you inspired and enthralled.

As Central Europe still shivers in the cold, the south greets you with a pleasantly mild climate. On a cycling holiday in Portugal, you can look forward to abundant sunshine, captivating coastlines, and vibrant cities. Cycling tours in the Algarve, in particular, are ideal for winter cycling adventures.

Start your cycling holiday in Faro, the vibrant capital of the Algarve—soak up the lively atmosphere of its numerous local bars and eateries. For the first stage of your journey, a transfer will take you to Albufeira, known for its striking whitewashed houses. On your return, you'll ride through the wild landscapes of the Ria Formosa, with its stunning beaches as your backdrop. The distinctive salt lagoons will continue to guide you the following day to the charming fishing village of Olhão.

On Day 4, you'll transfer from Faro to Tavira, with the enchanting Ria Formosa nature reserve continuing to be your scenic companion. As you pedal through the picturesque fishing villages like Fuseta, you'll be immersed in the region's charm. The following day promises a refreshing escape as you cycle from Tavira to the captivating “Pego do Inferno” waterfall. The journey is just as enjoyable as the destination, with idyllic landscapes adorned with cork oaks and olive trees guiding your way. Your final Algarve stage will lead you through serene pine forests and rolling dune landscapes, culminating at the Spanish border in the charming Vila Real de Santo António.

  • The natural beauty of the Ria Formosa: The Ria Formosa Nature Park is a protected and pristine wetland gem along the Algarve coast, celebrated for its remarkable natural beauty and rich biodiversity. Spanning approximately 60 kilometers, this sanctuary encompasses a tapestry of habitats, from tranquil lagoons and lush reed beds to shimmering salt pans and golden sandy beaches.
  • The white cityscape of Albufeira: The name "White City" reflects the city’s enchanting architecture, where the pristine white houses harmoniously merge with the scenic coastal beauty. These buildings, often adorned with vibrant shutters and blooming flower pots, exude a charming and welcoming allure, adding to the city’s irresistible appeal.
  • Soak up the vibrant atmosphere of Faro: With its bustling markets, delightful restaurants, and relaxing seaside ambiance, Faro is a stunning destination. The city is renowned for its well-preserved old town, encircled by ancient city walls, and its charming, cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Among these is the impressive 13th-century Faro Cathedral, a true architectural gem.

Alongside the invigorating bike rides, you’ll relish delightful beach breaks on the Algarve’s sandy shores, meander through enchanting old town streets, and unwind in your charming accommodations. The journey covers about 265 kilometers, offering a mostly flat terrain with gently rolling hills, ensuring a scenic and pleasant experience.

Itinerary at a glance

Portugal's most renowned vacation destination beckons with idyllic beaches, breathtaking bays, and vibrant natural beauty. The region also offers a feast for the senses with its exquisite cuisine and rich cultural heritage, particularly in the historic old towns of Faro and Tavira, where every corner tells a story of timeless elegance.

Discover the charm of the Algarve’s capital with a leisurely stroll through its picturesque old town or indulge in a visit to the stunning nearby coastline.

In the morning, a transfer takes you to Albufeira, renowned for its whitewashed old town. Take a moment to look from the viewpoint over the “City Beach” before continuing to the stunning beach at Olhos de Água, where you can enjoy your first break. Breathe in the fresh sea air and feel the fine sand beneath your feet. You'll also be impressed by one of the largest marinas in the country in Vilamoura. As the scenery becomes more tranquil, cycle through pine forests toward the Ria Formosa Nature Park, one of Portugal’s seven natural wonders. Conclude your day in Faro’s historic old town, where charming restaurants and lively streets offer the perfect setting for an evening unwind.

From Faro, cycle along the Ecovia Litoral bike path, passing the region's characteristic salt pans with their towering salt mounds, to the charming fishing village of Olhão. Enjoy a brief respite at the promenade before leaving the coast and venturing into the tranquil countryside. In the authentic village of Estoi, life moves at a leisurely pace. Explore the quaint church and picturesque, typically Portuguese squares where you might encounter the locals. Return along peaceful roads to the bustling coastal area and cycle through the Ria Formosa Nature Park back to Faro.

Today it's time to "pack up" as you change your accommodation and head east to Tavira. Travel through the Ria Formosa Nature Park, keeping an eye on the offshore islands and marveling at the abundant birdlife. In Olhão, stop by the bustling market to observe the locals with their daily shopping or pick up some provisions for your ride. Continue at a relaxed pace to the fishing village of Fuseta, known for its charming white houses. From the beautiful old town of Tavira, with its historic Roman bridge, it's just a short distance to your accommodation located just outside the city gates.

From Cabanas, cycle through the heart of Tavira before heading out of the city along a peaceful country road by the Rio Sequa. You'll reach the small waterfall known as “Pego do Inferno,” a favorite swimming spot for locals. Continue through the quintessential Algarve landscape, passing cork oaks, olive trees, and plantations towards the coast. In the quaint village of Moncarapacho, take a moment to explore the village church or savor a delicious lunch. Then, return to Tavira along pleasant, scenic routes.

Today, the Ria Formosa Nature Park with its lagoons will continue to accompany you along the coast. Be sure to take a detour to Cacela Velha to enjoy stunning views over the sea before cycling through the pine forests along Monte Gordo Beach and the dune woods of Vila Real de Santo António, reaching the border between Portugal and Spain. Follow the Guadiana River for a stretch before rolling over gentle hills, passing orange and olive groves. By now, you’ll want to celebrate a successful and richly rewarding cycling journey, perhaps with an evening in Tavira, one of the Algarve's most beautiful and quintessential towns.
