Mediterranean Landscapes along the Canal du Midi

Once a vital trade route, today one of the most enchanting companions on a cycling vacation: the Canal du Midi. Built in the 17th century to link the Garonne with the Mediterranean, this historic waterway now guides cyclists through the heart of Southern France. With the canal at your side, you ride between cathedrals and châteaux while discovering some of the region’s most charming towns — including Olonzac, Béziers, and Sète. Lavender-scented breezes, sunlit vineyards, and the relaxed rhythm of the canal create a wonderfully Mediterranean atmosphere along the way.

The Lavender Bloom

The most iconic symbol of Provence is the fragrant, vividly purple lavender. This iconic plant captivates travelers not only with its beauty, but also with its versatility — as scented sachets, a spice, or fragrant soaps. From mid‑June, the fields turn into a blooming sea of flowers that is especially impressive when admired from the saddle of a bicycle.

Pont du Gard Near Nîmes

Just a few kilometers from Nîmes and Uzès stands one of France’s most impressive examples of Roman engineering: the Pont du Gard. Built in the 1st century AD, it is the tallest Roman aqueduct in the world at 161 feet (49 meters) high. A must-see for anyone exploring this region.

Be sure to visit the Arles Amphitheater during your cycling tour. Its impressive arches and arena create an unforgettable experience. For nearly 2,000 years, it has served as a stage for concerts and festivals, and it’s easily reachable from the Camargue.

Particularly impressive are the flamingos, which live freely in the wild and are lovingly celebrated by locals in decorations around homes.

Remarkably, this region is home to Europe’s largest breeding colony of pink flamingos.
