The Hannes Schmidt School, located in the small community of Köstendorf in the Salzburg region, provides a supportive learning environment for children with special needs. The school assists students who may not receive the specialized support they need in a traditional elementary or middle school setting. Their educational philosophy is built around each child's individual strengths, aiming to support their personal development to the fullest.
As important as structured lessons are, experiences in nature are invaluable—especially for high-energy children. However, due to financial and organizational constraints, these outings can sometimes be few and far between. We wanted to change that. That’s how the idea for a joint Eurohike hiking day with a class from the Hannes Schmidt School was born.
On a fall day in early October, four Eurofun sustainability ambassadors joined a class of cheerful children and their teachers for a day out to the stunning Wenger Moor. We came prepared with backpacks full of drinks, hearty trail snacks, and a small coloring book as a surprise. The kids were thrilled—not just for the treats, but mostly for the chance to go on an outdoor discovery tour together. Surrounded by marshy landscapes, fall colors, and exciting nature sightings along the path, there was plenty of laughter, wonder, and hiking. Of course, the young hikers were also allowed to try their hand at navigating with the Eurohike & Eurobike on Tour app.
We truly believe that physical activity, nature experiences, and community outreach go hand in hand. For the children, it was a day full of new impressions outside the classroom. For us, it was a rewarding reminder of how wonderful it is to bring a little joy to small hikers.
Because these children have truly captured our hearts, we dedicated our holiday initiative this year to the Hannes Schmidt School. Our goal is to provide the kids with "Experience Days" on a local farm. There, they can see firsthand where our food comes from and get some hands-on experience—literally—by helping with planting and harvesting in a fun, playful environment.
To make this happen, the Eurofun team has been busy raising funds, which we were thrilled to present to the school at the beginning of the year.
As of 2026, we are taking another major step toward resource conservation: all travel documents are now available for our guests in one convenient, compact, digital location within the Eurohike & Eurobike on Tour app. The app serves as the perfect digital travel companion, making route navigation a breeze and eliminating the need to carry bulky paper documents in your backpack.
By switching to digital travel documents, we are significantly reducing paper consumption and saving a substantial amount of natural resources. Using fewer printed materials doesn't just save paper; it also reduces the use of printing ink, transportation, and packaging materials.
At the same time, our guests benefit from maximum flexibility: travel documents are accessible anytime on smartphones, tablets, or laptops, and can even be viewed offline.
Of course, the printed version remains available as a service option for those who prefer to hold their travel materials in the classic, physical format.
In the Hotel: Conscious Consumption
At the buffet: Mindful dining
Who hasn't been there? The generous breakfast buffet offers so many delicacies that you don't know what to choose. In the end, your appetite was greater than your stomach, and valuable food remains uneaten on your plate and ends up in the trash. Take only as much as you can actually eat. It’s better to head back to the buffet for seconds than to throw away leftovers. This simple habit conserves resources and helps eliminate food waste.
On the road: Sustainable cycling
It’s very important to me to remind all cyclers that we are moving through untouched nature, which serves as a vital habitat for plants and wildlife. That’s why it is essential to take your trash with you—pack in, pack out. When I’m on the path, I always pick up any litter I see. Grabbing a stray candy wrapper on a mountain path costs nothing, but it keeps our trails clean and improves the experience for everyone.
Best of all: Try to go completely plastic-free while cycling. I always use refillable water bottles and reusable snack containers. Many hotels offer packed lunches that you can easily carry and enjoy in an eco-friendly way.
