Travel Story: Lake Reschen - Lake Garda

Cycling Through South Tyrol – A Journey Through Diverse Landscapes
View of Lake Garda in Riva

"La bella Italia" – and especially Lake Garda – has long been a favorite vacation spot for many. I’ve visited the region several times myself. South Tyrol, on the other hand, is still unfamiliar territory, but its reputation for breathtaking landscapes has me intrigued. As a passionate cyclist, I decide on the tour from Lake Reschen to Lake Garda to explore South Tyrol’s vibrant diversity on two wheels.

Once the destination is set, everything falls into place. Our travel specialist arranges the tour quickly and seamlessly. The anticipation grows – and soon, the adventure begins.

On the Road at Last

The day starts with a hearty breakfast and growing anticipation. Right on time, Eugen greets us at the reception - he’s our local support and takes us to the starting point at Lake Reschen, where our bikes are ready and waiting. Before us lies a stunning scene: the lake shimmers with an air of mystery and rising from its center is the iconic sunken church tower.

At the moment, though, Lake Reschen has the feel of a construction zone. A nearby road is being relocated closer to the shoreline, and as a result, the water level has been lowered. Only a small pool of water remains around the tower - likely left that way intentionally, since this mystical landmark is known far beyond the Vinschgau Valley.

Just a short distance away, we discover Lake Haider - one of the most beautiful and untouched lakes in the Alps. Ducks and coots glide gracefully across the water, while anglers try their luck along the shore. For nature lovers, this serene lake and its surrounding habitat are a true hidden gem.

We continue cycling along the Adige Cycle Path, passing through the charming towns of Burgeis and Glurns - nestled in the Stilfserjoch National Park region. The route delights with apple orchards, fruit gardens, and vineyards. The gentle rush of the River Etsch accompanies us, along with the soft clang of cowbells, the bleating of sheep, and the cheerful birdsong that fills the air.

The Way is the Reward

The following day, we continue along the Etsch, framed by stunning mountain vistas at every turn. We pass ancient ruins and steadfast castles - silent witnesses to centuries gone by. A standout stop is the humble St. Prokulus Chapel in Naturns. Nestled among fragrant apple orchards and a lovingly nurtured garden, this quiet sanctuary invites us to breathe deeply and reconnect with the present moment.

Soon after, we arrive in Algund, resting on the ancient path of the Via Claudia Augusta. Here, the Trauttmansdorff “Throne Chairs” rise before us - a place to sit, reflect, and take in sweeping views of the Merano valley below. From this peaceful perch, the famed botanical gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle unfold like a living tapestry.

In Merano itself, a winding panoramic trail leads us up a gentle hill. The promenade delights with a vibrant array of blossoms, sweeping views of the Alps, and a serene outlook over the Passer River - an ideal place for a leisurely, restorative stroll.

There’s no better way to wake up and Trento Awakens the Spirit of Italy

Morning greets us with birdsong, the gentle murmur of a nearby stream, and the soft chime of the church bell. Overnight rain has left the air crisp and clear - a perfect start to the day. After breakfast, we saddle up and continue our self-guided cycling tour toward Bolzano.

The path winds peacefully through blossoming orchards and quiet villages. In the distance, we catch sight of Sigmundskron Castle, perched proudly on a rocky outcrop. With its towering walls and rich history, the fortress stands as a striking landmark along our route.

We continue to follow the Etsch, our faithful companion, as we cycle through picturesque villages. Upon reaching Trento, we're captivated by its historic old town and its southern charm. Surrounded by vineyards, we soak in the Mediterranean atmosphere and fully immerse ourselves in the Italian way of life.

A Grand Finale: Lake Garda

Even the final stage of our journey has plenty of highlights in store - from cozy places to stop for a bite to the famous Gelateria Bologna, where we treat ourselves to a well-earned scoop of ice cream. Here, we also run into a few familiar faces - fellow travelers we’d already enjoyed chatting with earlier along the way.

We continue on to the charming village of Nago. After a short climb, we soak in one last sweeping view - then begin our exhilarating descent toward Lake Garda. And finally, as we glide into Riva del Garda, it appears before us: the deep blue lake, cradled by mountains. To me, this is the epitome of natural beauty.

Conclusion

What captivates me is not only the peaceful soundscape - the birdsong, the gentle babbling of streams - but also the rich variety of vegetation along the perfectly pristine cycling paths.

And the Italian cuisine is simply a dream: pizza, pasta, fresh salads drizzled with the finest olive oil - everything tastes just amazing here. Meadows, forests, mountains, lakes, rivers, and a vibrant floral world accompany us throughout the entire route. What more could one ask for?

The stages are pleasantly manageable - mostly flat or gently downhill.

My personal highlight? Without a doubt, the stretch from Schlanders to Merano. I’d love to spend more time in Merano - the flower-filled parks, the charming arcades, and the countless little details of the town captivate me instantly.

My favorite spot

The garden of the St. Prokulus Chapel feels like a tender slice of paradise - a gentle haven perfect for a peaceful pause. Soft birdsong flutters through the trees, while vibrant flowering shrubs lovingly embrace the garden’s edges. Nearby, a quaint wooden fountain murmurs a quiet lullaby. Inviting wooden benches welcome you to sit, breathe, and savor the moment. Behind the chapel, delicate apples begin to ripen on the trees. Wrapped in this lush, emerald embrace, the entire scene feels like a lovingly crafted painting come to life.
