A journey to my beloved homeland, Italy — cycling from Innsbruck to Verona. As a travel specialist overseeing this self-guided bike tour, I knew immediately that I had to experience the route myself. Joined once again by my parents, we arrive at our first hotel in Innsbruck. Brimming with excitement, we set off on a new cycling adventure. Ready to join us? Let me take you along on this unforgettable cross-border journey!

Excellent on-site support

The hotel staff greet us warmly, and that evening we join an informative session led by our expert guide Michael, alongside many other guests. We receive all the essential details about the tour before getting handed our rental bikes. Brimming with excitement for the adventure ahead, we spend a pleasant evening in the Tyrolean capital.

First stage: from Innsbruck to Brixen

After a hearty breakfast, we get ready for the first stage of our cycling adventure. The day starts with a minibus transfer that takes us and our bikes from our hotel in Innsbruck to the quaint border town of Brenner. Along the way, our friendly driver & on-site support Julian, shares fascinating insights about the route ahead. From Brenner, a scenic, gently downhill bike path follows the Eisack River. With a cool breeze and the sun warming our faces, we set off on our e-bikes, riding through forests and mountains accompanied by the calming sound of the flowing river.

After a refreshing coffee break in Sterzing and a leisurely stroll through its charming streets, we continue along the bike path toward Brixen. En route, we take a brief detour to admire the magnificent Neustift Monastery (Abbazia di Novacella), dating back to the 12th century. Although the first raindrops start to fall, we reach our hotel in Brixen without any trouble and end the day with a delicious, well-deserved pizza in the old town.

From Brixen to Bolzano

The second stage of our journey starts off a bit damp, but thankfully the sun soon breaks through the clouds. We bid farewell to our warm hosts in Brixen and hop on our bikes, heading toward South Tyrol’s capital: Bolzano.

The bike path meanders once again through lush forests and impressive mountains that softly frame our route. Though the sky remains partly cloudy, we eventually arrive in Bolzano bathed in sunlight. After checking into our room at the Parkhotel Laurin, we relax and soak up the last warm rays in the hotel’s park.

While my parents explore the city, I take the chance to visit our Bolzano station and catch up with my friendly colleagues.

A leisurely stroll through the old town’s charming streets brings our second stage to a perfect close.

Between Vineyards and Hillsides: From Bolzano to Auer

A hearty breakfast gives us the perfect start for today’s stage. As we approach the border with the Italian-speaking Trentino, the landscape around us gradually transforms—rolling hills, gentle mountains, and endless vineyards unfold before us. Our route takes us to one of the most stunning highlights of the entire journey: Lake Caldaro, a hidden natural gem on the outskirts of Auer. We pause for a leisurely lunch by the lake, soaking in the breathtaking views.

At a relaxed pace, we continue to the village of Auer and settle into our hotel for the night. Over a delicious dinner, we smile as we reflect on the beautiful day we’ve just experienced.

The Gateway to the South: Trento

We leave Auer behind and head toward today’s destination: Trento, the city of the Council. The Adige Cycle Path gently guides us through apple orchards and vineyards, while the sun warms our spirits.

A brief stop in Neumarkt (Egna), a charming town with South Tyrolean flair, is well worth it. Continuing along the Adige River, we pass several well-equipped rest stops inviting us to pause and relax. By early afternoon, we arrive in Trento and treat ourselves to a well-deserved break in the hotel’s wellness area.

From Trento to Rivalta

The weather isn’t on our side today, and unfortunately, rain accompanies us the entire way. Still, we don’t let it dampen our spirits and hop on our bikes. After all, there’s no such thing as bad weather—only good or bad gear. Riding through vineyards and orchards, accompanied by the sound of rain, we arrive at our hotel in Rivalta. To end the day, we enjoy a delicious plate of homemade tagliatelle in the hotel restaurant.

Destination in sight: the final stage to Verona

After saying goodbye to our warm-hearted hosts, we set off on our final ride toward Verona. Vineyards and orchards flank our path as the mountains gradually fade behind us. Before long, Verona appears just around the corner, and we arrive at our last hotel.

We tuck our bikes away in the hotel garage and spend a delightful evening in the city of Romeo and Juliet, savoring memories of the incredible journey we’ve shared over the past few days.

Conclusion

Exploring new corners of my beloved Italy from the saddle of a bike is always a true pleasure. The Innsbruck to Verona tour is ideal for anyone wanting to experience the stunning natural beauty of the Italian mountains at a leisurely, unhurried pace. From South Tyrol through Trentino to Veneto, the Bel Paese never ceases to amaze.

My Favorite Spot

On the route from Brixen to Bolzano, I pause briefly in a charming village that truly stands out: Klausen. With its narrow lanes and tucked-away corners, it embodies the timeless charm of a traditional South Tyrolean village. It’s the perfect place to unwind with a coffee before continuing the ride to Bolzano.
