The essentials at a glance

Bike and boat tour along the Main River from Bamberg to Frankfurt. Easy cycling on quiet paths and country roads with daily distances of 30-60 km. Highlights include UNESCO World Heritage Site Bamberg, Würzburg Residence, Miltenberg Castle, and Aschaffenburg's Renaissance palace. Full board accommodation in outside cabins with daily tour briefings. Route passes through Franconian wine country with historic towns, half-timbered architecture, and scenic riverside landscapes.

Historic old towns, charming castles, and magnificent churches draw visitors from one place to the next in Franconia. Surrounded by forests and often enclosed by towers and ancient walls, many of these towns have a fairy-tale quality. Each one also invites you on a culinary journey of discovery. It's no coincidence that Franconia is known as a “land of indulgence.” The art of brewing beer is just as deeply rooted here as the tradition of winemaking. Local wines and beers pair perfectly with the hearty regional cuisine. One thing is certain: the way to fall in love with Franconia is also through its food.

In Bamberg, be sure to explore the vibrant city center and stop at one of its traditional brewery restaurants. Your holiday continues by ship to Hassfurt, then by bike to Schweinfurt, where industry meets art and history. Passing through Stammheim and Kitzingen, the route leads to Würzburg, a city renowned for its wine culture and historic landmarks.

Whether by bike or boat, Day 5 takes you to Karlstadt and the charming half-timbered town of Lohr. The itinerary also includes Wertheim and Freudenberg, both crowned by historic castles. On the final stage, you’ll ride along the Planeten-Radweg through shaded forests, before dropping anchor in Aschaffenburg, the last stop of this journey.

  • Breweries in Bamberg: Bamberg’s long brewing tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. The city hosts several breweries producing a wide variety of beers, including the famous smoked beer (Rauchbier). A perfect way to end an extensive city tour!
  • A Glass on the Old Main Bridge in Würzburg: Thanks to the region’s limestone soils and mild climate, full-bodied white wines thrive here. One of the best spots to enjoy a glass is the Alte Mainbrücke. Be sure to explore the city’s many sights – climb the steps to the Käppele chapel and enjoy the stunning panorama!
  • Historic Buildings along the Route: The route is rich with culturally significant and diverse castles and palaces. Highlights include the Kurmainzer Schloss in Lohr, Wertheim Castle, and the impressive Johannisburg Palace in Aschaffenburg.

Cycling along the Main is truly a pleasure: the paths are flat, well-maintained, and ideal for relaxed riding. On board the MS Casanova, you can rest at any time – the crew is on hand to assist and provide full-board meals throughout your journey.

Germany is crisscrossed with rivers, and there’s beauty to discover at every turn. Traveling by bike and boat is especially relaxing, as your hotel accompanies you throughout your entire holiday.

itinerary at a glance

Individual arrival in Bamberg and embarkation from 4:00 p.m. onwards. Bamberg is a city full of character and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The “Island District” resembles a little Venice, the “Hill District” is often called the Franconian Rome, and the “Gardeners’ District” is truly one of a kind.

In the morning, you arrive in Haßfurt with its charming historic old town. Nestled between two nature parks, the city is home to remarkable sacred buildings such as the late Gothic Knights' Chapel and the parish church, featuring sculptures by Tilman Riemenschneider. From here, you hop on your bike and ride to the former imperial city of Schweinfurt.

Today’s destination is either Kitzingen or Marktbreit, depending on the final mooring confirmation. The historic wine trading town of Kitzingen is home to the German Carnival Museum, offering insights into a significant aspect of Franconian tradition. The town’s landmark is the Falterturm, known for its distinctive crooked roof. In Kitzingen, a long history of brewing meets winemaking. Several local inns serve hearty Franconian specialties such as Sauerbraten with dumplings or “blue” carp. Alternatively, you can choose to stay on board until Volkach, which shortens the bike tour by approximately 25 kilometers.

Today, Würzburg awaits you with many sights to explore. One of the highlights is the Würzburg Residence, considered one of Germany’s most important palaces and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. Other well-known landmarks include St. Kilian’s Cathedral and Marienberg Fortress. Würzburg is also a center of Franconian wine culture and, as a vibrant university town, full of life even in the evenings.

In the late morning, you arrive in Karlstadt. Towers, gates, and old walls surround the historic center with its half-timbered houses and narrow alleyways. Today’s destination is the town of Lohr am Main. Its old town, shaped by typical Franconian timber-frame architecture, marks the gateway to the Spessart hills. Buildings such as the Electoral Mainz Castle add to the town’s fairy-tale charm.

Your ship takes you to the residence city of Wertheim, with its impressive Castle as its landmark. This historic town, featuring a charming market square and what is said to be the narrowest house in Franconia, marks the starting point of today’s bike stage to Freudenberg. Perched high above the Main River and the town, Freudenburg Castle sits at the edge of the Franconian Odenwald.

The highlight of today’s bike tour is Miltenberg, home to the Mildenburg Castle, built in 1200. From Erlenbach to Kleinwallstadt, you follow the “Planet Cycle Path,” offering interesting facts about the planets along the way. The riverside forest between Niedernheim and Nilkheim provides a pleasantly shaded route during summer. All along the Main River, you’ll find benches and picnic spots that invite you to take a break—or even go for a swim.
Your destination is the charming university town of Aschaffenburg, known for its impressive Renaissance palace, Johannisburg Castle, built from red sandstone. The town also offers plenty of wine taverns, cafés, and traditional inns to enjoy. In the evening, a farewell dinner awaits you on board as your ship sails back to Frankfurt/Main.

After breakfast checkout until 9:00 am– have a safe journey home.
