Bike and boat tour from Frankfurt to Bamberg along the Main River. Easy cycling on quiet paths and country roads through Franconian wine country. Highlights include UNESCO World Heritage sites in Würzburg and Bamberg, Renaissance Johannisburg Palace in Aschaffenburg, charming medieval towns like Miltenberg and Volkach, and the picturesque Volkacher Mainschleife. Daily distances average 30-50 km. Full board accommodation on MS Casanova with 7 nights in outside cabins.

Franconia is a region of excellent wines, some say—while others praise the traditional Franconian beers. On this journey through Wine and Beer Franconia, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample fine wines, tasty local brews, and a variety of culinary delights. But Franconia isn’t just a paradise for food and drink lovers. Look forward to historic towns, charming old quarters, and even a “Little Venice.” After all, the eyes deserve some pleasure too.

Please note: Selected dates for this tour include a special offer!

On this bike & boat holiday, you will discover the Main River at its most enjoyable – a region rich in Franconian wines, traditional brewing culture, and idyllic river landscapes. From Frankfurt, the route initially leads to Aschaffenburg, known as the “Bavarian Nice,” before continuing along quiet cycling paths through floodplain forests, small half-timbered towns, and the Planeten-Radweg to Freudenberg.

In Wertheim and Lohr, atmospheric old towns await, each dominated by historic castles. The tour continues by bike and boat to Karlstadt and Würzburg, where baroque architecture and world-famous wine culture impress visitors. Through Kitzingen or Marktbreit and along the scenic Volkach river bend, you reach Schweinfurt and Haßfurt, before finishing in Bamberg, the “Franconian Rome,” with its Klein Venedig district providing a crowning finale.

  • Aschaffenburg & Johannisburg Palace: Renaissance splendor, Mediterranean flair, and cozy wine taverns at the foot of the Spessart hills.
  • Planeten-Radweg on the Main: Cycle at a relaxed pace while exploring a scale model of our solar system – a fun and unique experience along the way.
  • Wertheim & Lohr: Two charming old towns with half-timbered houses, narrow streets, and striking castles perched above the Main.
  • Würzburg Residence & Marienberg Fortress: UNESCO World Heritage sites showcasing baroque architecture and breathtaking panoramic views.
  • Volkach River Bend: A narrowing Main Valley with vineyard-covered slopes offering an atmospheric wine experience.
  • Bamberg & Klein Venedig: Medieval scenery, seven hills, eleven breweries, and a unique Franconian way of life.

This tour is rated easy, making it ideal for beginners and leisure cyclists. Most of the route follows flat, well-maintained cycle paths close to the Main, often right along the water. Daily stages range from 30 to 60 km, offering plenty of flexibility with numerous rest stops, optional ship segments, and gentle terrain. The combination of vibrant cities, historic town centers, and tranquil nature makes this route especially varied and enjoyable.

In the evenings, return to the MS Casanova, your comfortable floating hotel, for a relaxing end to each day.

itinerary at a glance

Embarkation starts at 4:00 p.m. in Frankfurt/Main. By 5:00 p.m., it's time to cast off! Enjoy your first dinner cruise as you head toward Aschaffenburg. Nestled at the foot of the Spessart hills, this peaceful university town on the Main River (approx. 70,000 inhabitants) boasts numerous magnificent buildings. Johannisburg Palace, built from red sandstone, is one of the most important and beautiful Renaissance buildings in Germany. Even King Ludwig I called Aschaffenburg the “Bavarian Nice” thanks to its pleasant climate.

Just before you arrive in Bürgstadt/Miltenberg, you can cycle on either the right or left side of the Main River. The riverside forest between Nilkheim and Niedernheim offers pleasant shade in summer and is easy to ride through. From Kleinwallstadt to Erlenbach, the "Planet Cycle Path" accompanies you - with interesting facts along the way. Benches and picnic areas can be found all along the Main, inviting you to take a break or even go for a swim. Tonight, your ship will dock in Freudenberg, about 10 km from Miltenberg. Perched high above the Main and the town of Freudenberg, the Freudenburg castle overlooks the landscape at the edge of the Odenwald.

While you enjoy your breakfast, your ship will take you to Wertheim. This charming town has preserved the character of a traditional Franconian small village and is the starting point of today’s bike tour through the typical Main River landscape. There's plenty to see along the way to Lohr, with its picturesque old town full of historic buildings and Franconian half-timbered houses.

In the early morning, your ship takes you past Gemünden to Karlstadt, where you hop on your bike. Karlstadt offers both old-town charm and rural idyll. Discover buildings over 800 years old in the historic town center, surrounded by walls, towers, and gates. From here, enjoy a relaxed ride to Würzburg, where you’ll rejoin your ship in the afternoon. Be sure to visit the Würzburg Residence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, or enjoy the stunning views from Marienberg Fortress.

Your bike tour takes you along the Main Cycle Path from Würzburg through the fertile Ochsenfurt region to the charming town of Ochsenfurt, known for its distinctive turreted gate. From there, continue to the historic town of Marktbreit, with its splendid townhouses, and on to Kitzingen. Alternatively, your ship may dock in Marktbreit, shortening the bike tour by approx. 10 km.

From Schwarzach am Main, you cycle first to Volkach (here you have the option to leave the ship and shorten the bike tour). A visit to the pilgrimage church St. Maria im Weingarten is well worth it. The route then takes you to Fahr, where a welcome sign in the shape of a Bocksbeutel (the iconic Franconian wine bottle) greets you. From there, continue through the scenic Volkacher Mainschleife - where the valley narrows and vineyards become more frequent—until you reach Schweinfurt.

In the morning, your ship takes you to Haßfurt. From there, you cycle via Zeil am Main—located right on the border between Wine Franconia and Beer Franconia—to Bamberg. Like Rome, the city was built on seven hills and is often referred to as the “Franconian Rome.” Discover the charm of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t miss the picturesque fishermen’s quarter known as “Little Venice,” a row of 17th-century riverside houses. And no visit to Bamberg is complete without a cold beer—the city is still home to eleven independent breweries!

After breakfast checkout until 9:00 am– have a safe journey home.
