Castle Neuhaus am Inn, with planted boats in the foreground

The green river Inn winds its way from the Austrian Alps into Bavaria, then follows the state border and merges with the river Ilz and the blue Danube in Passau. Join the river on this journey and discover the magnificent surrounding landscapes. The history of the towns along the Inn is captivating, as they have endured floods for centuries and the river served as a crucial trade route in the past. Enjoy stunning mountain vistas around Innsbruck, and explore the baroque town squares of Schärding and Obernberg. Along the way, you'll find many more cultural, culinary, and historical highlights!

Your journey along the Inn begins in the city that shares its name with the river: Innsbruck. This city attracts visitors with its Alpine panorama and the Golden Roof. The first stage offers plenty to see, including a visit to the Swarovski Crystal Worlds. From there, take the train to Kufstein, where you will set off towards Wasserburg and continue on to Mühldorf. Enjoy the beautiful town squares along the way!

On day 6, you'll pass Burghausen, home to Europe's longest castle complex, and Marktl, the birthplace of a pope. After Kirchdorf, the floodplain landscape of the lower Inn opens up before you. Soak in the warm thermal waters in Bad Füssing before the final stage takes you through Obernberg and Schärding to Passau. In this city of three rivers, you bid farewell to the Inn as it merges with the Danube and Ilz, while you enjoy the charm of the Bavarian Venice.

  • In Innsbruck, you can enjoy the most breathtaking views from above. The city is surrounded by mountains offering spectacular panoramas. From Mount Isel with its famous ski jump, or from the Hafelekar on the opposite side, you are spoiled for choice. However, a walk through the old town is a must!
  • Birdwatching on the banks of the Inn: The Unterer Inn nature reserve is a significant protected area, featuring a diverse landscape of river islands, alluvial forests, wet meadows, and sandbanks. It offers a valuable habitat for numerous animal and plant species and serves as an important resting and breeding ground for many bird species, including ducks, herons, and rare waders.
  • The meeting point of the rivers in Passau: The Inn, Ilz, and Danube converge at a location known as Ortspitz in Passau. The varying colors of the waters are truly captivating and can be easily observed from the viewing platform at Veste Oberhaus.

Throughout your journey, you'll never stray far from the course of the river, so the route remains relatively flat. The stage lengths, ranging from 35 to 65 kilometers, cater to all levels of cyclists—you decide how quickly you want to complete each section.

On the Inn Cycle Path, you'll enjoy a wonderful experience from a scenic, cultural, and culinary perspective—whether at the river's source in Switzerland, in Austria, or in Bavaria, where the Inn finally flows into the Danube.

Itinerary at a glance

You'll visit the Golden Roof in Innsbruck, the old town of Hall, and the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens in Tyrol. One idyllic Bavarian village follows another as you make your way to Passau, where you can enjoy the atmosphere at the confluence of three rivers

Arrival to the provincial city of Tyrol. Take a walk through the beautiful old town of Innsbruck with its famous Golden Roof.

You leave the Tyrolean capital behind and cycle through picturesque towns and villages to Strass at the entrance to the Zillertal. Enjoy the breathtaking mountain panorama and take time for the old town of Hall and the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens. Take the train from Brixlegg to Kufstein.

Leaving the mighty castle complex of Kufstein behind you, you now cycle into the Bavarian Alpine foothills. Mainly on the embankment and partly in floodplain forests, the route takes you leisurely to Wasserburg. The special location in the river bend results in a unique townscape. With its historic old town, its beautiful facades and narrow streets, Wasserburg is certainly one of the most beautiful towns on the Inn.

The way to Mühldorf leads through cosy farmland, a little away from the Inn River, through small villages and beautiful hills. Typical for Mühldorf is the long town square with beautiful town houses.

Via Töging you bike today to Marktl. Next you pass the confluence of the rivers Inn and Salzach to Braunau am Inn. Worth seeing is the beautifully restored old town, the city tower from the 13th century and the parish church with the third highest steeple of Austria.

This section leads through the Lower Inn European Reserve. The floodplain landscape with its exceptional plant diversity is a breeding ground for numerous water birds. A little away from the river you will reach Bad Füssing. Enjoy the huge health and wellness offer.

On the way to Passau, picturesque baroque towns line up: Obernberg with its beautiful market square, the magnificent Reichersberg Abbey and the baroque town of Schärding with its Silberzeile. At the confluence of the Inn and Danube rivers, Passau rewards you as one of the most beautiful cities in Germany.
