A cycling journey perfectly blends activity and relaxation—and nowhere is this harmony more enchanting than in the Munich surroundings. Beyond the “Weißwurst metropolis,” time slows. Pedal through mystical moorlands, wander charming villages en route to the impressive market square of Bad Tölz. Yet it’s the warm hospitality and hearty cuisine that truly leave a lasting impression. Along the way, be sure to pause at a traditional beer garden and enjoy a Maß paired with some classic Bavarian cuisine.

The tour begins in Ambach or Bernried on Lake Starnberg. Upon arrival, enjoy the beauty of the region in peace and quiet. Treat yourself to a delicious pastry and watch the world go by – Lake Starnberg is a hotspot for the rich and famous after all.

Now it really begins! Past small villages, head towards Murnau am Staffelsee. It is truly a picturesque place, because it is peppered with galleries and studios and was once the home of great artists such as Wassily Kandinsky. On day 3, Bad Tölz is waiting, which is not only famous for the German tv series ‘Der Bulle von Tölz’. You can’t miss the variety of lakes that you cycle past: Riegsee, Kochelsee and the Osterseen invite you to take a dip in the clear water.

  • The idyllic Lake Starnberg: The people of Munich already know why it is at the top of their list of excursions. Germany’s fifth largest lake is a real feast for the eyes. Off you go, for example, to the Bernried beach and jump from the jetty into the lake and cool off. Tip: take a wooden boat to the Roseninsel. Even Empress Sisi was impressed by its beauty.
  • Magnificent views of the Zugspitze: Anyone who is out and about in the area around Murnau will not be able to miss it: the Zugspitze. A leisurely cycle includes views of the Wetterstein Mountains, home to Germany’s highest mountain.
  • The Marktstrasse in Bad Tölz: Colourful houses with wonderful decorations adorn the centre of Bad Tölz. One spot or another may be familiar from the German tv show. Marktstrasse is now a pedestrian zone and invites you to stroll and indulge.
  • The turquoise blue Isar: Again and again, the route crosses the Isar, which originates as a wild mountain river in Tyrol meanders through Bavaria. When the limestone of the Karawendel Mountains shimmers in the sun, they appear in a beautiful turquoise green.

The leisurely stages are between 30 and 50 kilometres long, so that you can enjoy your short holiday to the full. With the exception of a few climbs, the route is mostly flat.

Itinerary at a glance

Bavaria captivates with breathtaking views of the Wetterstein Mountains and the Zugspitze. Meanwhile, culinary delights await along the charming market street of Bad Tölz. Lake Starnberg beckons you to enjoy a leisurely stroll along its shores and a refreshing swim.

After you arrive, why not start with a leisurely stroll along Lake Starnberg or even a refreshing swim? A visit to Bernried Castle is well worth your time, as is a boat ride across the lake. Let yourself be captivated by the beauty of this stunning region!

The route begins along the southern shore of Lake Starnberg, leading you to the quaint town of Seeshaupt. You’ll pedal through picturesque, traditional Bavarian villages along scenic paths. Be sure to pause at the stunning Osterseen lakes and the peaceful Riegsee before arriving at your day’s destination, Murnau, nestled by Lake Staffelsee.

Passing by Lake Kochel and Benediktbeuern, the route winds through atmospheric landscapes toward Bad Tölz. Situated at the crossroads of two historic trade routes—the Isar River and the old salt road from Bad Reichenhall to the Allgäu—Bad Tölz quickly grew into a thriving trading hub. The richly decorated townhouses still stand as a testament to this prosperous era.

To wrap up your cycling adventure, enjoy a relaxed ride through gentle hills and green meadows as you return to your starting point. Be sure to take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Starnberg before you finish.
