Do you have questions about this tour?
A cycling journey perfectly blends activity and relaxation—and nowhere is this harmony more enchanting than in the Munich surroundings. Beyond the “Weißwurst metropolis,” time slows, inviting you to leisurely explore the region between Lake Starnberg and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Pedal through mystical moorlands toward the Zugspitze and wander charming villages en route to the impressive market square of Bad Tölz. Turquoise waters shimmer in the Isarwinkel region, renowned for its picturesque lakes. Yet it’s the warm hospitality and hearty cuisine that truly leave a lasting impression. Along the way, be sure to pause at a traditional beer garden and enjoy a Maß paired with some classic Bavarian cuisine.
Tegernsee, Starnberger See, and Barmsee beckon you to dive into their refreshing waters and relax amidst stunning surroundings. Along the way, authentic Bavarian charm comes to life in picturesque towns like Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Bad Tölz, where history and tradition are woven into everyday life. On Lake Starnberg’s enchanting Rose Island, trace the footsteps of Empress Sissi, then ascend to breathtaking heights atop Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze.
After you arrive, why not start with a leisurely stroll along Lake Starnberg or even a refreshing swim? A visit to Bernried Castle is well worth your time, as is a boat ride across the lake. Let yourself be captivated by the beauty of this stunning region!
The route begins along the southern shore of Lake Starnberg, leading you to the quaint town of Seeshaupt. You’ll pedal through picturesque, traditional Bavarian villages along scenic paths. Be sure to pause at the stunning Osterseen lakes and the peaceful Riegsee before arriving at your day’s destination, Murnau, nestled by Lake Staffelsee.
You begin the stage cycling through the Murnauer Moos nature reserve—the largest moorland in Central Europe. Pedal through pristine wilderness as you follow the Loisach River toward Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The day’s ride is deliberately short, allowing time for an optional ride on the Zugspitzbahn up to 2,962 meters (9,718 feet). From the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Alps!
You’ll cycle from Garmisch-Partenkirchen through Klais to the beautiful Barmsee. Afterwards, you can either ride directly to your overnight stop or take a detour via Mittenwald and Scharnitz to the source of the Isar River. The route climbs a total of 300 meters (about 980 feet) up to Scharnitz, then continues with gentle uphill stretches through wild, romantic gorges and lush alpine meadows to the Isar spring. Cycling through the sunny high valley, you’ll enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountain ranges as you make your way over Mittenwald to Wallgau—a village where Bavarian traditions are still very much alive.
You’ll pass through the Isarwinkel region, following the crystal-clear, turquoise waters to the impressive Sylvenstein Lake. Continuing through the picturesque landscape of Lenggries, you’ll arrive in Bad Tölz. Situated at the crossroads of two historic trade routes—the Isar River and the old salt road from Bad Reichenhall to the Allgäu—Bad Tölz quickly grew into a thriving center for commerce. The richly decorated townhouses still bear witness to this prosperous era.
Through the charming Tegernsee landscape, you’ll reach Gmund am Tegernsee, where stunning lake views await. The route then follows the Gaißbach Valley back to Bad Tölz. In Bad Tölz, the market street invites you to explore the footsteps of the popular German TV crime series “Der Bulle von Tölz.”
To wrap up your cycling adventure, enjoy a relaxed ride through gentle hills and green meadows as you return to your starting point. Be sure to take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Starnberg before you finish.
This tour is generally easy, featuring just a few short climbs. Beginning in Bernried, you’ll follow scenic bike paths and peaceful side roads. Most of the route is paved, with some longer sections on well-maintained gravel or natural surfaces. Main roads are only encountered briefly.
