You will leave the wine growing region and cycle on pleasant paths through the Rhine plain until you reach the cathedral city of Speyer with its medieval inner-city. The famous ensemble of palace and palace-garden in Schwetzingen is a further highlight of the tour before your day will end in the oldest German university town Heidelberg.
You will cycle along the river Neckar to the old Roman town of Ladenburg with its beautiful medieval inner city. Then you will continue your tour through the Rhine valley to the imperial city of Worms with its cathedral built in the 12th century, the Martin Luther monument and the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe
Enjoy a ride along the river Rhine, partly on the idyllic paths at the ancient Rhine channels, to Oppenheim, “the city of Gothic style and wine”. During a short ferry ride across the Rhine you can already enjoy the view of Nierstein embedded of countless vineyards. Corresponding we have organized a wine tasting for you.
Through the vineyards you will cycle to the second imperial cathedral of this tour in the capital of Rheinland-Pfalz, the city of Mainz. Here you will cross the river Rhein and visit the Gutenberg museum. In the romantic town of Rüdesheim you can take the cable car to enjoy a splendid view over the vineyards, a very recommendable experience.
After crossing the river Rhine again, you will get to Bingen, where the river Nahe joins the Rhine and where four wine growing regions meet. We recommend visiting the bridge Drususbrücke, which was built in the 10th century, next to the Mäuseturm tower as well as the bridge chapel (Brückenkapelle). Up and down the vineyards you will cycle to the “Volker City” Alzey, which still feels close to its fiddler from the Song of the Nibelungs. In the wine hotel a sommelier will explain you the diversity of the wine for you.
The short stage will allow you to spend lots of time to explore and enjoy the wine culture in this area. You will reach in Bobenheim, the beginning of the German Wine Road and your day will end in the small wine growers town of Grünstadt.
Wonderful wine grower villages are the cultural highlights of this day. In Bad Dürkheim, you will see the biggest wine barrel in the world and for sure you will have another wine tasting in this town. In Deidesheim, we recommend visiting the wine museum in the medieval town hall. Then, you will cycle via the region called “Balcony of the Pfalz” to the secret wine capital of Germany.
Departure or extension
The routes along the rivers Rhine and Neckar are completely flat. In the wine-producing regions you will find yourself on hilly terrain.
