This tour, which starts in the three-river city of Passau or in the baroque town of Schärding and leads to beautiful Vienna, is quite something - in many respects. You cycle the 330 km route at a sporty pace over five days. The stage destinations are a string of highlights that combine nature and cities, culture and action as well as culinary delights and enjoyment. So what are you waiting for?
Choose between Schärding and Passau for your first overnight stay - don't worry, there's no right or wrong here, as both towns are real gems. The first stage takes you to the Upper Austrian capital of Linz. Let yourself be inspired by art and culture, stroll through the old town and, to compensate, take the Pöstlingbergbahn up to Linz's local mountain, where a breathtaking view awaits.
On day 3, it's worth focusing on architecture and history, as you pass the Celtic village of Mitterkirchen, the baroque town of Grein, the Maria Taferl Basilica and the imposing Melk Abbey, among others. Take another deep breath before the final stage through the lovely Wachau region to the vibrant metropolis of Vienna. Why not plan an extension, the Austrian capital has endless things to offer!
On this tour you will walk in the historical footsteps of the Celts, Nibelungs and Romans, who used the Danube as a transport and trade route. Today, the well-maintained Danube Cycle Path winds alongside it. For the 95 to 115 km long stages of this tour, you should be in good shape and have cycling experience.
Stroll through the pretty little baroque town of Schärding and marvel at the famous Silberzeile lane or take a walk through the “New Centre” of Passau, the three rivers town , which has been completely redesigned as a pedestrian, car-free area.
