Cycling group in the Wachau

Start your journey in Grein and cycle through the various districts of Lower Austria to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. You will simply fall in love with the marvellous landscapes along the Danube, such as the Machland, the Strudengau or the famous Wachau. In addition to these impressions, you can enjoy many traditional Austrian delicacies. Your physical wellbeing will be well catered for, from savoury dumpling specialities and moreish must all the way to the wines of the Buschenschenken taverns in the Wachau.

The Danube Cycle Path runs through several countries, from Germany to the Black Sea in Romania. Once considered one of the most important trade routes in Europe, today it is one of the most popular destinations for a cycling holiday.

Your five-day cycling adventure kicks off in Upper Austria, starting in the charming town of Grein, nestled in the heart of the Strudengau—a stunning region defined by one of the Danube’s most dramatic bends. Right from the start of your first stage, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views as you pedal your way into the picturesque Wachau Valley. The next day, your journey continues through the famed vineyards of Lower Austria, guiding you to the historic town of Traismauer. Along the way, you’ll pass the legendary Melk Abbey, its majestic facade visible from miles away. And don’t miss the chance to explore the inviting city of Krems, with its rich history and vibrant atmosphere.

Your cycling journey concludes in the enchanting capital of Austria. As you follow the Danube eastward, you’ll arrive at the expansive Danube Island, a serene natural paradise in the heart of the city with its own special charm. From there, you’ll glide into Vienna’s vibrant city center, where every turn reveals a new wonder. Be sure to indulge in the Viennese tradition of visiting a cozy coffee house, a quintessential experience that belongs on everyone’s to-do list.

  • Culinary delights centered around grapes and apricots: On the stunning terraced vineyards of the Wachau, grapes thrive, transformed by skilled winemakers into exquisite wines. Whether you choose Steinfeder, Federspiel, or Smaragd, don’t miss the chance to savor Grüner Veltliner and Riesling during the delightful wine tasting included in your experience. Even more enchanting are the apricots, celebrated in every imaginable way, whether as comforting apricot dumplings, fragrant schnapps, luscious jam, or simply enjoyed in their pure, succulent sweetness.
  • Between Schönbrunn Palace and the Danube Tower: Vienna is the world’s most livable city for a reason as wherever you turn, a new highlight awaits you! Take a leisurely stroll along the Ring Road, where you’ll be captivated by a tapestry of iconic landmarks. Indulge in a shopping spree at the chic boutiques nestled between the “Steffl” and the Graben and immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere by the Danube. Every moment in this magnificent city is a chance to discover something extraordinary!
  • Baroque splendor in Melk Abbey: The history of the Benedictine monastery dates back to 1089, a site that has seen numerous transformations over the centuries. The monastery is distinguished by its striking ceiling frescoes, created by the renowned artist Paul Troger, and its lavish marble hall, which showcases the architectural grandeur of the era. Visitors are also encouraged to explore the meticulously maintained gardens, which provide a tranquil setting and offer breathtaking views of the Danube River, making it a significant cultural and historical landmark.

The Danube Cycle Path is a true classic among cycling tours, following the course of the second longest river in Europe. Well-maintained paths and flat landscapes make cycling a delightful experience. Each day, you'll cover between 50 and 65 kilometers on two wheels. Our travel specialists have crafted an ideal route for you, ensuring a smooth journey. You’ll stay in comfortable hotels, with your luggage conveniently transported from one accommodation to the next, allowing you to focus on enjoying the ride and the stunning surroundings.

Itineraryat a glance

The Wachau region awaits you as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - ancient wine terraces, the imposing Melk Abbey and the town of Krems will enchant you. Enjoy a wine tasting as well as a pastry with melange coffee in Vienna.

Grein has always been known as the "Pearl of the Strudengau". It was regarded as the last safe mooring point for ships before the dangerous Struden (= whirlpools) of the Strudengau. Indeed, ships were often even unloaded here before they made their way through the danger spots. This is how Grein became the enchanting town it is today.

The Danube valley narrows to reveal the fascinating spots of the Strudengau. The blue Danube can be admired particularly well from Maria Taferl. From here it is only a few kilometers to the Wachau. The name alone is enough to make your mouth water! As colorful as the Wachau's surroundings are, the region's tasty natural products, such as apricots and apples, are just as diverse. The Wachau offers delicious regional cuisine at the highest level.

Melk - the gateway to the Wachau! A visit to the monumental Benedictine monastery is almost a must. You can expect varied landscapes, lovely vineyards and wide plains! Today you cycle past the 1000-year-old town of Krems to Traismauer, the gateway to the heart of Lower Austria.

Your last cycling stage to Vienna begins. The feeling is simply overwhelming as you cycle the last few kilometers across the Danube Island to the end of your journey, the capital of Austria. And finally the time has come: a visit to the Vienna Prater and probably the most famous Ferris wheel in the world awaits at the end. But a stroll through Mariahilfer Straße, a visit to one of the many coffee houses and some time at Schönbrunn Zoo would also be fine. Vienna itself is one big highlight!
