Start your journey in Grein and cycle through the various districts of Lower Austria to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. You will fall in love with the landscapes along the Danube River such as the Machland, the Strudengau, or the famous Wachau. In the rural areas, to accompany these wonderful impressions, you can enjoy many traditional Austrian delicacies. Your physical wellbeing will be well catered for, from savoury dumpling specialities and moreish must all the way to the wines of the Buschenschenken taverns in the Wachau.

Along the way, you’ll pass the legendary Melk Abbey, its majestic facade visible from miles away. Your cycling journey concludes in the enchanting capital of Austria. As you follow the Danube eastward, you’ll arrive at the expansive Danube Island, a serene natural paradise in the heart of the city with its own special charm. From there, you’ll glide into Vienna’s vibrant city center, where every turn reveals a new wonder. Enjoy the landscapes of the Wachau and treat yourself to a regionally produced wine. Other highlights such as the 1000-year-old town of Krems and the Danube metropolis of Vienna lie along the cycle route

Grein has always been known as the "Pearl of the Strudengau". It was regarded as the last safe mooring point for ships before the dangerous Struden (= whirlpools) of the Strudengau. Indeed, ships were often even unloaded here before they made their way through the danger spots. This is how Grein became the enchanting town it is today.

The Danube valley narrows to reveal the fascinating spots of the Strudengau. The blue Danube can be admired particularly well from Maria Taferl. From here it is only a few kilometers to the Wachau. The name alone is enough to make your mouth water! As colorful as the Wachau's surroundings are, the region's tasty natural products, such as apricots and apples, are just as diverse. The Wachau offers delicious regional cuisine at the highest level.

Melk - the gateway to the Wachau! A visit to the monumental Benedictine monastery is almost a must. You can expect varied landscapes, lovely vineyards and wide plains! Today you cycle past the 1000-year-old town of Krems to Traismauer, the gateway to the heart of Lower Austria.

Your last cycling stage to Vienna begins. The feeling is simply overwhelming as you cycle the last few kilometers across the Danube Island to the end of your journey, the capital of Austria. And finally the time has come: a visit to the Vienna Prater and probably the most famous Ferris wheel in the world awaits at the end. But a stroll through Mariahilfer Straße, a visit to one of the many coffee houses and some time at Schönbrunn Zoo would also be fine. Vienna itself is one big highlight!

Flat or slightly downhill along the Danube. The cycle path is very well-built and there are no motor vehicles for almost all of the tour. Minor roads make up only very short sections of this tour – the Danube cycle path is a perfect cycle route.

Travel Story: Danube Cycle Path, Linz – Krems
Five days feels just right - a short journey is ideal, and we don’t want to miss out on delicious food and wine. The daily stages should also be manageable, as we’re eager to explore beyond the cycling route. After a quick chat with the travel specialists, I’m convinced: a short tour between Linz and Krems on the Danube Cycle Path is the perfect choice. New to the lineup this year is the Danube Cycle Path – Wachau tour, a five-day, four-night option. It would have been a great fit for our short summer getaway over the holidays, but we ultimately decide to start our journey in Linz.

The dreamy Danube Cycle Path
During one of the last beautiful summer weeks I cycled with a friend on a shortened version of the Donau Cycle Path from Linz to Vienna. We had everything from bright sunshine to pouring rain. But as the saying goes, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!” Most of the cycle path lies directly on the Danube and is very well signposted. The area is very flat and therefore the cycle path does not have any steep inclines - even without an electric bike we manage every stage effortlessly. By the way: We offer the Danube Cycle Path in different variants and also for families from Schärding to Linz!

Travel report: Danube Cycle Path
I had already cycled the German Danube Cycle Path in 2017 (Donauschingen – Passau) and Eurobike had given me the wonderful opportunity to cycle the Austrian part. I chose a shortened tour of about 300 kilometres over three days. Luggage transport, travel documents, hotel reservations and even a wine tasting were included in the tour organised by Eurobike. There was also a route planner and more information about the cities. The hotels were pre-booked and there is a hotline available, should there be any problems.
