From Grein to Vienna
This self-guided cycling tour follows the Danube Cycle Path through the Wachau valley from Grein to Vienna. The easy, mostly flat route covers approximately 60-65 km daily along well-maintained paths. Highlights include the Strudengau region, the UNESCO World Heritage Wachau valley with its vineyards and apricot orchards, the Melk Abbey, the 1000-year-old city of Krems, and Vienna with its famous Prater and Schönbrunn Palace. A wine tasting in the Wachau is included.
Start your journey in Grein and cycle through the various districts of Lower Austria to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. You will fall in love with the landscapes along the Danube River such as the Machland, the Strudengau, or the famous Wachau. In the rural areas, to accompany these wonderful impressions, you can enjoy many traditional Austrian delicacies. Your physical wellbeing will be well catered for, from savoury dumpling specialities and moreish must all the way to the wines of the Buschenschenken taverns in the Wachau.
The Danube Cycle Path runs through several countries, from Germany to the Black Sea in Romania. Once considered one of the most important trade routes in Europe, today it is one of the most popular destinations for a cycling holiday.
Flat or slightly downhill along the Danube. The cycle path is very well-built and there are no motor vehicles for almost all of the tour. Minor roads make up only very short sections of this tour – the Danube cycle path is a perfect cycle route.
