Cycle tour from Lake Chiemsee to Lake Königssee through Bavaria's stunning alpine landscape. Medium difficulty with mostly flat terrain on cycle paths and side roads. Highlights include a boat ride to Herrenchiemsee Island with King Ludwig's Castle, the Fraueninsel monastery, Bad Reichenhall's historic cable car, and the Watzmann massif at Lake Königssee. Daily distances range from 20-65 km through charming lakeside villages and mountain valleys.
Do you have questions about this tour?
Lake Chiemsee is a beautiful blue colour. The biggest lake in Bavaria, also called the Bavarian Sea, is embedded in a gorgeous natural world. This idyllic scenery has been appreciated equally by the ancient Romans, the archbishops of Salzburg and the Bavarian dukes. Experience history and stories around deep blue lakes, around Bavarian traditions and cuisine. Whilst cycling, you have tons of time to immerse yourself into this historic idyll!
The cycle tour starts at the Chiemsee, the largest lake in Bavaria. A first walk to the lakeside gives the holiday a relaxing start. The first three days focus on exploring this natural blue beauty. You cycle about 60 kilometres comfortably on the circular path on the shores of the Chiemsee. From bustling lakeside villages to untouched bays, you’ll see it all!
Tip: Dare to take a dip in the lake during the extensive breaks. You will find the refreshment does you good! Those who prefer cool drinks to splashing, will also be happy! On the shore you will discover numerous shady beer gardens, which invite you in to sit back and enjoy.
From the ‘Bavarian Sea’ you continue on the bike saddle over Inzell and Bad Reichenhall to Berchtesgaden in the next three stages. You pedal hard, because the route runs between the mountains along the Saalach river. Once in Berchtesgaden, enjoy the lake and mountain landscape and the traditional village.
Chiemsee islands: The diverse lake has some treasures to offer. Do you know the islands of the Bavarian Sea? The Eurobike team recommends a boat trip to the Herreninsel and and Fraueninsel. Picturesque fishing villages, artists’ colonies and the magnificent palace of King Ludwig II await you.
Bad Reichenhall: The spa town of Bad Reichenhall lies in the midst of the Bavarian Alps and impresses with its special flair. Wellbeing, culture and hospitality are of prime importance, be it a spa day or a ride on the Predigstuhl, the oldest cable car in the world. Need a holiday souvenir? The Reichenhall brand salt is the perfect as a small souvenir.
The tour is considered easy. Short stages and few gradients ensure that enjoyment is the focus. For some sections you need slightly more muscle power on the slightly hilly bike paths. There is always time to recover though!
Lake Chiemsee has a lot to offer, such as the King Ludwig's Castle on Herreninsel and the monastery on Fraueninsel. In Bad Reichenhall, the oldest cable car in the world awaits - don't forget a beer garden stop.
Arrival to Prien, Bernau or Aschau. In the evening welcome briefing and rental bike fitting.
The Chiemsee circular path is beautifully designed. It leads you to secluded swimming bays as well as to densely populated lakeside resorts. Whilst cycling comfortably along the lakeside, marvel at the stunning views onto the lake. For extensive breaks along the way you come acorss many shady beergardens along the lakeside. You also have the option of shortening part of the daily tours by a special bike-bus (on your own).
There are countless possibilities to spend an enjoyable day at the ‚Bavarian Sea’. For example take a boat ride to the islands ‚Herrenchiemsee’ (King Ludwig palace) and ‚Frauenchiemsee’. Naturally there are numerous bathing spots for a relaxing day on the lakeside.
Gradually the mountains become higher and higher. The terrain of the cycling route however stays nearly flat. Through the ‚Bergener moor’ at the foot of the Chiemgauer local mountain, called ‚Hochfelln’ (1674m), the path leads you via Bad Adelholzen with its mineral spring to Siegsdorf. From there along the river red Traun onwards into the idyllic Inzell. Special artwork, called ‚Lüftlmalerei’ on the flower-embellished houses are typical for this climatic health-resort.
The route runs narrowly between the mountains via Piding around the Hochstaufen and along the Saalach to Bad Reichenhall. Since 1890 Bad Reichenhall has been an approved health resort and “spa town”. The saline Bad Reichenhall markets its branded salt as “Reichenhaller Markensalz” in all of Germany and beyond. Opportunity for a “wellness day” or for a ride up to the 1600m high “Predigtstuhl” with the world’s oldest and legendary cable car.
Short tour to Berchtesgaden. Opporturnity for a visit to the salt mine Obersalzberg as well as the Kehlstein house. Alternatively cycle a few more kilometres to Lake Königssee with the option of a boat ride on this well-known lake and a visit of the monastery Bartholomä, situated at the foot of the phenomenal Watzmann massif.
Overall an easy tour with short daily stages and only a few ascents. The terrain is only in parts slighly hilly. Tremendous route on cycle and rural paths as well as side roads. Only very short sections on roads with moderate traffic.
