Half-timbered houses in the pedestrian zone of Melsungen

Throughout your journey along the Fulda and Werra rivers, towns steeped in a millennium of history, pristine landscapes, and contemporary art and cultural attractions will grace your path. Over the course of eight days, you'll traverse Hann. Münden, Kassel, and Eschwege. Adorning the route are castles and palaces, while vistas of the low mountain range reveal enchanting perspectives.

Half-timbered house after half-timbered house contributes to the charm of beautiful Hann. Your cycling journey commences here, with Kassel as your initial destination. Explore the Hercules statue and one of the numerous museums before embarking on a brief and leisurely stage to Melsungen. The following day, the route guides you along the Fulda River and through dense forests to Rotenburg an der Fulda.

On day 5, the charming town of Eschwege awaits on your itinerary. The stages remain short as you traverse the picturesque low mountain range to reach this half-timbered gem. Beginning the penultimate leg of your journey, you'll be greeted by sweeping views of the Hoher Meißner. In Bad Sooden-Allendorf, renowned for its half-timbered architecture and spa facilities, you'll discover an array of wellness amenities. Finally, the last few kilometers along the Werra River lead you through orchards back to Hann. Let the enchantment of the surroundings captivate you once more or extend your vacation for another day or two to savor the experience further!

  • On the trail of the Weser Renaissance in Hann: The town is famed for its impeccably preserved old town featuring over 700 half-timbered houses, historic structures, and quaint alleyways. Hann. Münden is affectionately dubbed the "city of three rivers" due to the confluence of the Fulda, Werra, and Weser rivers. While you're here, immerse yourself in the charm of the idyllic old town, stroll along the riverbanks, and pay a visit to Guelph Castle.
  • Art and culture in Kassel: From the majestic Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe boasting its castle and iconic Hercules statue, to the globally acclaimed Documenta showcasing contemporary art, and the Grimmwelt Kassel paying homage to the renowned brothers' legacy - the city presents a diverse cultural panorama. The expansive Karlsaue Park beckons for leisurely moments, offering a verdant oasis that beautifully complements the city's cultural richness.
  • Bad Sooden-Allendorf is famed as a spa destination, cherished for its rejuvenating thermal springs and genuine spa experiences. Among its highlights is the graduation house, where guests can breathe in the revitalizing air from the salt works, and the scenic historic old town adorned with delightful half-timbered houses and welcoming alleyways.

The route along the two rivers is intentionally designed to be short for each day's journey. You'll travel a maximum of 40 kilometers per stage, and even some of the few uphill sections can be avoided by taking the train. This allows plenty of time to explore the central German region, guaranteeing a fulfilling experience without feeling rushed.

A vacation by the water exerts a particularly special allure. There is plenty of this to be found on a cycling vacation in Central Germany, whether along the Rhine, the Lahn, the Moselle, Fulda, or Werra rivers. Naturally, in addition to natural beauty, the heart of the Federal Republic also offers cities, culture, and culinary delights.
