The Weser Cycle Path 'Epicure'

We recommend a little stroll through the medieval centre of Hann. Münden with the historic half timbered houses of the Weser Renaissance is very interesting. You will love the splendid old houses.

You start your journey at the Weserstein. On your way to Bad Karlshafen, you will pass the charming village of Hemeln in the Weser valley and the former Benedictine abbey of Bursfelde, founded in 1093. Bad Karlshafen's baroque old town forms a charming contrast to the Weser Renaissance and the town's Huguenot Museum is a reminder of its founders. But perhaps you might also be tempted by a visit to the Weser thermal baths? ‘Brine spa’ is another of Bad Karlshafen's nicknames. You can stay overnight in the town or in neighbouring Beverungen with its partly preserved moated castle of the same name.

Today you cycle past the porcelain town of Fürstenberg with the castle of the same name and the old Hanseatic town of Höxter as well as Corvey Castle (UNESCO World Heritage Site) to Holzminden or on to Bodenwerder. Holzminden is nicknamed the ‘town of fragrances and flavours’ because the production of fragrances and flavours is very important here. And so a fragrant tour leads to the sights of the town. Bodenwerder is the home of Baron Münchhausen, known as the Baron of Lies, to whom a museum is dedicated.

Today, romantic villages and Corvey Castle are on your way. Until 1792, the castle was a Benedictine abbey, one of the most influential in the Franconian Empire. The former abbey church, among other things, bears witness to this time. You spend the night in Hameln or Rinteln. The legendary figure of the Pied Piper is commemorated in Hameln by the Pied Piper's House, which was built at the beginning of the 17th century. Like Hameln, Rinteln has a magnificent old town centre: the illuminated historic market square also has its charm in the evening.

At Porta Westfalica, you pass from the lower Weser Uplands into the North German Plain. Your journey takes you to Minden. The town, which is over 1,200 years old, is known for its waterway crossing, which leads the Mittelland Canal over the Weser on a bridge. A signposted route takes you to the sights in Minden's old town around the Cathedral of St Gorgonius and St Peter.

Wide floodplains, individual farms and windmills characterise the Mittelweser region, which you cycle through today. Nienburg awaits you as the destination of the day's tour. The town has been an important trading centre and crossing point over the Weser since the 13th century. Such a place naturally needs to be defended. And so you can still see parts of the fortifications and bulwarks that protected Nienburg back then. Bear paws on the street lead to places of interest, such as the half-timbered town hall or the asparagus museum.

Today's route is characterised by a vast landscape that offers little resistance to the view. The region is rural and unspoilt, interspersed with small villages and individual farmsteads. You reach the equestrian and horse town of Verden, which has erected a monument to the noble animals with the German Horse Museum. The town's most impressive sacred building is Verden Cathedral. The best way to get to know old and romantic Verden is on a walk through the fishermen's quarter.

The Bremen Town Musicians and the Roland statue, which together with the town hall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are world-famous. Historic Bremen can be seen in the Schnoorviertel and Böttcherstraße, while the Schlachte, Bremen's historic riverside promenade, is a culinary delight. Your individual return journey begins in the afternoon. Alternatively, you can start your extension day and enjoy the Hanseatic city of Bremen to the full.

From Bremen follow the Weser bike path through the village Lemwerder to Elsfleth with the well known Hunter-Barrier.

The route leads along the river weser past Brake to Nordenham. With the ferry in Blexen you come to Bremerhaven.

Your tour takes you along tarmac paths and small roads through the Land Wursten to the dune coast of Cuxhaven. The world's busiest shipping lane and its museum harbour make Cuxhaven a maritime cosmopolitan city.
