Allgäu Lakes Tour - Based in one Hotel

Full of anticipation and curiosity, it's time for another cycling adventure! Ursula shares her story of a magical tour through the Allgäu region.

Just like on my last Team Member on Tour adventure at Lake Constance, one thing quickly becomes clear this year: my parents and my husband are joining me again! They always enjoy our perfectly organized cycling tours. Since we especially love cycling along lakes, it doesn't take long to decide on a tour through the Allgäu region to Füssen.

Setting-Off Full of Excitement

Our journey begins! We head out by car, taking the scenic German Alpine Road toward Füssen. Even on the drive, we’re captivated by the breathtaking mountain views.

A culinary highlight awaits us on our very first evening at Restaurant Hirsch, nestled in the heart of Füssen. From the moment we step in, we feel genuinely welcomed—the local server in a traditional dirndl offers us warm, Bavarian hospitality. The food is simply outstanding, with each course a delight for the senses. We’re especially charmed by the romantic outdoor garden: surrounded by old, rustic trees, it’s the perfect setting to unwind and savor the evening.

Whether it’s tender local venison or freshly caught fish from nearby waters, every bite melts in our mouths—and the beautifully presented dishes are just as pleasing to the eye.

Around the Forggensee

Today’s stage leads us along idyllic paths right beside the shores of the Forggensee, with stunning views of the impressive Füssen Festival Hall. The route is enjoyable and easy to ride, offering breathtaking glimpses of the surrounding mountains at every turn. Near a narrow section by the lake close to Café Maria, the path becomes so tight that we briefly hop off our rental bikes. It’s the perfect opportunity for a break: we treat ourselves to a coffee while soaking in the view over the shimmering water.

Time and again, we pass charming little spots to grab a bite—ideal for sampling traditional Bavarian delicacies. At one especially inviting place, we seize the chance to cool off with a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear water.

Approaching the far end of the lake, another panoramic vista unfolds, showcasing the majestic mountain backdrop. Cows graze peacefully on lush green meadows, their bells gently chiming—making it feel as if we’ve stepped straight onto an alpine pasture. The route then winds along the Bannwaldsee before bringing us back to Füssen, our minds full of impressions, nature’s beauty, and a welcome break from the rush of everyday life.

Ride to the enchanting Neuschwanstein Castle

Today’s itinerary features the castle circuit. We begin with a short ride through Füssen, cross the Lech River, and continue cycling past lush green, blooming meadows and through pleasantly cool forest sections. Time and again, the view opens up to the imposing Neuschwanstein Castle—a true postcard scene. Built by King Ludwig II, the castle looks like a fairytale palace. With its impressive silhouette, turrets, and lavish interiors, it unmistakably calls to mind the iconic Disney castle.

I recommend starting this tour as early as possible in the morning, as Neuschwanstein Castle is a major attraction. Once you arrive at the castles, you have the option to travel by horse-drawn carriage up to the castle. This is sure to be a special experience, especially for little princesses. Overall, I believe the Allgäu Lake Tour is an excellent choice for a family cycling holiday. Most of the routes run away from traffic, making relaxed cycling enjoyable fadults and children.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Our route continues past Hohenschwangau Castle to the idyllic Alpsee, nestled in a lush green natural setting. My mom is busy taking photos, capturing the beautiful scenery with her camera.

We ride on through the shady forest, stopping at the Marienbrücke, where you get a fantastic view of Neuschwanstein Castle and a nearby waterfall.

On our way back from the Royal Castle Circuit, we’re unexpectedly caught in a sudden thunderstorm. The distant views had already been somewhat limited, so we decide to press on quickly. Fortunately, our hotel is not far away.

Since the weather cut our return journey a little short, we opt for a short afternoon detour to the Lechfall waterfall. We definitely didn’t want to miss this impressive natural wonder. With its tiered cascades and turquoise water, it’s a true highlight of the region and an absolute must-see experience!

Culinary Highlights and Breathtaking Views

Afterwards, we stroll through the beautiful old town, where colorful facades and charming surroundings invite you to linger and relax. We admire sights like the clock tower and the late Gothic-style Hohe Schloss. In the narrow streets of the old town, we enjoy delicious local dishes. Highly recommended are the König Ludwig Schnitzel (a special schnitzel named after King Ludwig), gebratene bayrische Entenbrust (roasted Bavarian duck breast), Allgäuer Käsespätzle (cheese noodles from the Allgäu region), Zwiebelrostbraten Allgäuer Art (onion roast beef, Allgäu style), or a Rinderfilet (beef fillet) from the Königswinkel region.

In the evening, the Best Western Hotel invites you to enjoy a strudel or a tasty Eierschwammerlsuppe (chanterelle mushroom soup) on the terrace.

Emmentaler, Here We Come

On Thursday, we glance somewhat skeptically at the sky, as the weather looks a bit unsettled. Nevertheless, we decide to tackle the Emmentaler bike trail. The short stretch through Füssen is quickly behind us, and soon the route leads us along the forest edge toward Weißensee and onward to Eisenberg.

One lovely spot follows another where cozy benches invite us again and again to pause and take in the views across the lake. The bike paths are pleasant to ride, sometimes gravelly, but easy to manage. Since the weather isn’t very inviting today, we’re just about alone on the trail. This allows us to cycle side by side in peace, chat freely, and fully enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.

At the Weizern mountain dairy, a delicious Brettljause awaits us, which we can customize to our liking. Whether it’s speck, wild sausage, spreadable cheese, or well-aged cheese — mild or spicy—there’s something for every taste. Naturally, a Bavarian beer and a good glass of wine complete the snack perfectly. A brief rain shower keeps us a little longer in the cozy mountain dairy — but we don’t mind at all. Surrounded by tasty cheese and warm hospitality, we thoroughly enjoy the break and savor every moment.

A Grand Finale to the Tour

Unfortunately, our final day is here. We start with a boat excursion on the Forggensee before heading home. To perfectly wrap up this Bavarian cycling adventure, we add a special visit to Linderhof Palace in Ettal as a memorable bonus.

Final Thoughts

What more is there to say? The pictures speak for themselves. This short getaway will remain an unforgettable experience for us — so many impressive moments to carry with us. It was simply wonderful to discover yet another beautiful corner of our world. As the saying goes, “Why travel far when the best is so near?”

MY FAVORITE SPOT

On my cycling vacation, I discovered not just one favorite spot, but three that I’d love to share with you.

Campfire Site at Forggensee

The first favorite spot is a cozy campfire site by the Forggensee. From here, I can take in the breathtaking view: Neuschwanstein Castle majestically crowns a hill, the majestic Alps rise in the background, and the sparkling, beautiful Forggensee unfolds right before my eyes.

View of the Weißensee

My second favorite spot is along the Emmentaler bike trail, where you pass by the Weißensee. There are plenty of places to pause and soak in the scenery. I love how the peaceful bike paths wind right along the lake and are completely free from road traffic.

Fairytale Castle Neuschwanstein

My third favorite spot is near Neuschwanstein Castle. Here, we pause to quietly absorb the breathtaking scenery. The view is truly stunning—a heartfelt reminder of the beauty that surrounds us.
