Scenic Tour of the Salzburg Region

High mountains, green alpine pastures and rushing rivers - SPORTY

7 Days / 6 Nights
Athletic

Starting from Mozart’s city of Salzburg, you follow stunning routes through the alpine landscapes of Salzburg, Tyrol, and Bavaria. Panoramic paths lead you past clear rivers, sparkling mountain lakes, and lush alpine meadows where the sound of cowbells accompanies your ride. Snow-covered peaks of the Hohe Tauern and wide vistas of the Kaiser Mountains frame your journey, while baroque towns, medieval castles, and charming villages tell stories of culture and history. Nature’s wonders await too – from the thundering Krimml Waterfalls to the serene magic of Lake Königssee. Finally, you return to Salzburg, enriched with impressions that make this journey an unforgettable experience.

Itinerary at a glance

When you stroll through narrow alleys and to impressive squares, you can feel the charm of a city full of history. Between baroque architecture and Mozart’s legacy, cozy cafés invite you to enjoy Austrian coffee specialties in a classic atmosphere.

Hotel (example): Hotel Goldenes Theater

Following the Salzach River, you leave Salzburg’s old town with its baroque splendor and traces of Mozart behind. Through quiet valleys and the impressive Strubklamm gorge, the route leads you to the idyllic Hintersee. In the alpine pastures of the Salzkammergut, rocky peaks frame lush green meadows. Pause at a traditional mountain hut to sample Kaiserschmarrn or rustic speck bread before descending into the Salzach Valley and reaching Golling.

Hotel (example): Hotel Pension Gollingen

From Golling, the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path leads past the wild and romantic Salzachöfen Gorge and over the Lueg Pass. Along the way, the impressive Hohenwerfen Castle greets you before the view opens to the peaks of the Hochkönig massif. Shortly after St. Johann, you reach the Pinzgau, and at the crystal-clear Lake Zell the stage ends amidst a picture-perfect alpine setting – perhaps with a refreshing swim in the lake.

Hotel (example): Hotel zum Hirschen Zell am See

You leave Zell am See and follow the Tauern Cycle Path into the Upper Pinzgau, where the snow-covered three-thousand-meter peaks of Hohe Tauern National Park rise impressively. Blooming meadows and quaint villages alternate, creating a fairytale backdrop. At your destination in Krimml, the thundering waterfalls with their 380-meter drop provide a spectacular finale to the day.

Hotel (example): Panoramahotel Burgeck

On this queen stage, you cycle from Krimml down the valley to Mittersill and then climb the Pass Thurn. Soon you reach the glamorous town of Kitzbühel, with impressive views of the Kaiser Mountains to inspire you. In St. Johann in Tyrol, you can recharge with Austrian delicacies before continuing on the panoramic route through the mountains, past the Hochfilzen biathlon center, to Leogang and onward to Saalfelden at the foot of the Steinernes Meer. For a shorter option, you can reduce the stage by around 30 kilometers using the Krimml railway on your own.

Hotel (example): Hotel Hindenburg

From Saalfelden, cycle through the Saalach Valley to Weißbach with its impressive Seisenberg Gorge. Via Hirschbichl, you reach Berchtesgaden National Park and the picturesque Hintersee lake. The mountaineering village of Ramsau welcomes you, and against the backdrop of the famous Watzmann mountain, you reach the fjord-like Königssee lake. Through Berchtesgaden, you follow the shimmering blue Königsseeache river back to the Salzach and the Mozart city of Salzburg.
