City view of Marburg

Follow the River Lahn during this six-day journey, from its source in the Rothaargebirge (Rothaar Mountains) to the lively university town of Koblenz. The Lahntal cycle path is lined with castles and palaces, and picturesque towns continually invite exploration. Meadows, forests, vineyards – the region also scores with its scenic charm and, not least, culinary delights. Rest and rejuvenation are assured during this brief getaway!

Your cycling holiday begins in the heart of nature, precisely at the source of the Lahn River in the Rothaar Mountains. You'll cycle through untouched forest areas, heading first to Marburg, where the old town captivates with narrow streets and historic half-timbered buildings. The following day unfolds with a series of highlights as you journey through Gießen and Wetzlar, with the renowned Grube Fortuna adding to the allure.

On day 4, the scenery becomes majestic – your overnight stay in Braunfels features a fairytale castle, and a stretch along the Lahn brings you to the Renaissance Castle in Weilburg and the ruins of Runkel Castle. Next on the route is the cathedral city of Limburg, ultimately leading to Koblenz, where you have already reached the Rhine Valley.

  • Fairytale-like Marburg: Take advantage of your stay in the university town to mingle with the academic community and explore landmarks such as the Landgrave's Palace. The city is truly fairytale-like in the literal sense of the word. The Brothers Grimm once began their studies in Marburg, and this legacy is still evident today in various landmarks, such as the Grimm-Dich Path.
  • Grube Fortuna: You'll gain unique insights into the history of mining at the visitor mine near Solms-Oberbiel. In this region, the history of mining dates back to the Middle Ages, with a focus on extracting lead and zinc ore over the course of time.
  • Viticulture on the Lahn: Since the 13th century, wine has been cultivated along the Lahn. The combination of the river and the vineyards ensures magnificent views. Be sure to set aside ample time to visit a winery and indulge in the exquisite wines.

You will cover around 250 kilometers during the four stages along the Lahn - so despite the flat route, you should be in a good physical condition. The stages can be shortened thanks to the good rail connections. However, you decide when the time comes - because our team is also available to answer any questions or concerns you may have during your tour.

Beautiful landscapes, picturesque river valleys, stately castles, and palaces – cycling tours in Central Germany offer a lot of variety, relaxation, and excellent culinary experiences, especially when it comes to regional wines. Itinerary at a glance

Along the Lahn, nature meets lively towns and stately buildings. The idyllic source of the Lahn awaits you at the start, in Marburg you mingle with students in hip bars, in Koblenz you cycle to the "Deutsches Eck".

The Lahn-spring is located in the middle of Germany in the beautiful Rothaar Mountains. You spend the night directly at the spring in the middle of the forest in the cozy, comfortable “Forsthaus Lahnquelle".

The first day of cycling flies by. From the source of the Lahn you cycle through wooded countryside via Feudingen to Bad Laasphe and via Biedenkopf to the old university town of Marburg. The famous Elisabeth Church and the Marburg Landgrave's Castle are well worth a visit here. Culture and history have always inspired each other in Marburg. Let yourself be captivated by the fairytale-like old town. Enjoy pleasant evenings in restaurants or cosy student pubs.

Today you cycle through the wide Lahn floodplains via Gießen to the cathedral city of Wetzlar. Be sure to plan a visit to the old town - it's worth it! A visit to the visitor mine Grube Fortuna and the view from the fairytale castle of Braunfels are also well worth seeing.

Another highlight is on your programme. You cycle along the Lahn cycle path to Weilburg, whose Renaissance castle you should definitely not miss! You follow the Lahn cycle path very close to the river. Visit what is probably Germany's largest castle ruin in Runkel before you visit the world-famous Limburg Cathedral and the beautiful old town centre.

Once again, the Lahn cycle path offers the ultimate cycling pleasure. You cycle along the former towpath to Balduinstein. On this section, you will enjoy a picture-book cycle path! A refreshment stop at the Lahnwinzer on the Lahn refreshes your mind and palate. Visit Nassau Castle and the traditional Fürstenbad Bad Ems spa, which is well worth seeing, before the Rhine Valley opens up before your eyes. In Lahnstein, it's time to say goodbye to the idyllic course of the River Lahn, as you follow the Rhine Cycle Path for the last few kilometres to the centre of Koblenz.
