Tiger & Turtle - Magic Mountain in Duisburg

The essentials at a glance

Explore the industrial heritage of Germany's Ruhr Valley on this star tour based in Essen. Cycle along disused railway lines, rivers and canals on predominantly car-free paths. Daily routes of 55-65 km lead to former coal mines and steel works, including UNESCO World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein, the Gasometer in Oberhausen, and Villa Hügel. Visit underground coal mines in Bochum and discover how nature reclaims industrial sites at Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park.

Where coal was once mined and steel smelted, there is now a dense network of cycle paths. In Essen and the surrounding Ruhr area, former railway lines lead through green landscapes, past impressive coal mines and disused industrial sites. The Ruhr accompanies many of these paths – sometimes quiet, sometimes lively – and offers ever-changing views. Grey industrial areas have been transformed into green corridors for cyclists. Rediscover the region – on two wheels, between history and nature.

With your arrival in Essen, you will have the immediate opportunity to explore the city. During this centre-based tour, however, you will return to your starting point each day.

The first day trip takes you to Gelsenkirchen’s Nordsternpark, where a former coal mine was transformed for a federal garden show. Following the Rhine-Herne Canal, you reach the industrial site of Duisburg-Nord, passing the spectacular Gasometer in Oberhausen along the way.

On Day 4, you follow the Ruhr River along the cycling expressway to Mülheim, a city that fascinates with its historic districts and modern industry. During this stage, you will also pass the famous Villa Hügel at Baldeneysee. Another day tour takes you to the eastern Ruhr area, heavily shaped by coal mining. In Bochum, you visit a coal mine gallery and then explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Zollverein Coal Mine. With numerous impressions and a wealth of new knowledge, you return home on Day 6.

  • In the heart of the Ruhr area: You will be staying in Essen during this centre-based tours, a city that offers a fascinating mix of industrial culture, history, modern influences, and green oases. The city center is perfect for strolling and shopping, and art and culture lovers should not miss the Museum Folkwang.
  • Insights into coal mining at the Zollverein Coal Mine: Founded in 1851, this was one of the largest and most modern coal mines in the world. The impressive Shaft XII, built in 1932, is considered an architectural masterpiece of the Bauhaus era and is renowned for its functional design. After its closure in 1986, the site was successfully transformed into a cultural hub and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
  • The story of the Krupp family: Villa Hügel is an impressive estate that was the former residence of the industrialist Krupp family. Built between 1870 and 1873 under the direction of Alfred Krupp, the villa reflects both the power and influence of one of Germany’s leading industrial families. The estate has 269 rooms and is set within a vast park. Allow yourself to be captivated by this architectural masterpiece from a bygone era.

Cycling in the Ruhr area is a real pleasure due to the mostly flat terrain and the well-developed paths through industrial areas. You will ride along disused railway lines and through beautifully designed parks. Each day begins at your comfortable city hotel with a hearty breakfast before you set out on your stages.

On our website, you can find extensive information and many variations of our centre-based tours, all of which are designed for a relaxed travel experience. You stay in one accommodation for the duration of your holiday and return to your base after varied daily stages.

Itinerary at a glance

Around Essen, you'll be amazed by the transformation of coal and steel plants! In Bochum, you'll visit a coal mine and travel along the ore railway route to Zeche Zollverein. From there, you'll cycle via Mühlheim to reach Baldeneysee, where you can admire the impressive Villa Hügel.

Individual Arrival in Essen. Use the time until the welcome briefing start in the evening, to visit the Folkwang Museum, the cathedral with its treasury, or the Synagogue right next door.

In Gelsenkirchen's Nordsternpark, many things are reminiscent of the former colliery that once stood here. Numerous colliery buildings have been integrated into the park (the Federal Garden Show was held here in 1997). The 18-metre high 'Hercules of Gelsenkirchen' towers above the park. The circular tour also leads over two slagheaps, on which there are also modern sculptures. From here you have a wonderful view of the area.

One of the world's most extraordinary exhibition halls is the first stop, the Gasometer in Oberhausen. The tour continues along the Rhine-Herne Canal to the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park around a disused ironworks site. See how nature reclaims its terrain.

You cycle along the cycle path to Mülheim. Upstream along the Ruhr you pass through some small, pleasant districts: Saarn (monastery and beautiful old town), Kettwig, Werden (former abbey). Villa Hügel (former home of the Krupp family) rises above Lake Baldeney. End your cycling day in one of the numerous beer gardens along the Ruhr.

This tour is all about mining. In Bochum you can go underground and experience what it was like in the coal mines. The tour continues via the ore railway to the Zollverein colliery, probably the most beautiful colliery in the world and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
