Cyclists on Portugal's west coast

Embark on a stunning cycling tour that connects two of Southern Europe's most beautiful cities, Porto and Lisbon. Discover remarkable cultural sites as you ride through lush nature and along scenic coastal routes. The journey begins in Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage city. Savor a glass of port wine and other Portuguese delights before starting your grand adventure. Explore Portugal's Venice in Aveiro, the vibrant coastal city of Figueira da Foz, the awe-inspiring waves of Nazaré, the mystical town of Sintra, and much more. Filled with impressions, you'll arrive in the Portuguese capital, with its impressive old town and numerous attractions.

In the Algarve, on the Portuguese west coast or on Madeira? You are spoilt for choice for a cycling holiday in Portugal. Don't underestimate the hilly landscape - your efforts will be rewarded with fabulous views, beautiful nature and fine specialities.

Explore Portugal over twelve days, starting in Porto! Enjoy a glass of port wine, and in the morning, tackle the stage to Aveiro. Along the way, you'll pass the fishing village of Furadouro and the São Jacinto Nature Reserve. Journey through dune landscapes and along coastal roads to Figueira da Foz, with a detour inland to reach São Martinho. Spectacular steep coasts, impressive cliffs, secluded bays, and charming sandy beaches will accompany you along the way.

Enjoy numerous views of the Atlantic on your way to Peniche and Sintra, before reaching the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, on Day 7. Boat rides complement the cycling stages in the following days as you make your way to Setúbal and Sines. Along the route, you'll encounter the Arrábida Natural Park and the Troia Peninsula. Impressive high cliffs guide you to your penultimate destination, Odeceixe, as you pass through the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. The final kilometers to Sagres take you back inland, where a historical highlight awaits with the castle above Aljezur.

  • A day in Lisbon: The city by the Tagus River is enchanting, with one of its highlights being the historic district of Belém, featuring the tower and the Jerónimos Monastery—both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A stroll through the cobbled streets of Alfama, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, offers authentic insights into Portuguese culture and history. For panoramic views over the city, taking the Elevador de Santa Justa or climbing up to the Castelo de São Jorge is highly recommended.
  • Nature and History on the Troia Peninsula: Stretches along the coast of the Alentejo region, separating the Atlantic Ocean from the mouth of the Sado River, the peninsula is renowned for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Culturally, the ruins of ancient Roman settlements are of particular interest, once serving as vital centers for fish processing.
  • Breathtaking landscapes and historic buildings in Sintra: The picturesque town is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The famous Pena Palace, a colorful and extravagantly designed castle perched on a hill, is a must-visit! Sintra was once a favored retreat for the Portuguese royal family and nobility, resulting in a wealth of magnificent villas, gardens, and parks. The Monserrate Palace and Quinta da Regaleira are additional examples of the captivating architecture that can be found here.

You'll be captivated by the views along the Portuguese coast and inland, but be prepared for an active cycling journey with up to 100 kilometers per day. With a good base level of fitness, you can fully enjoy the stunning routes. The cycling tour is complemented by several included ferry rides, adding variety to your adventure.
