The route follows paved bike paths and quiet roads with gentle hills and longer climbs. Highlights include Viking burial mounds in Borre, Edvard Munch's former home in Åsgårdstrand, the Oseberg Ship in Tønsberg, and Fredrikstad's historic fortress. A ferry crosses from Sandefjord to Strömstad, Sweden. Daily distances range from 50 to 65 km.

Cycling along the Oslofjord immerses you in a captivating mix of nature, culture, and Nordic joie de vivre. Sparkling waters accompany your journey, peaceful bays invite leisurely pauses, and dense forests alternate with open coastal landscapes. Charming fishing villages and vibrant towns reveal both history and contemporary life, while cozy cafés, museums, and scenic viewpoints offer delightful surprises. As evening falls, warm light settles over the fjord, highlighting the special charm of this journey: cycling in harmony with Scandinavian nature.

Your seven-day holiday begins in Oslo, where culture, parks, and cozy cafés provide a relaxed start. Following the sparkling fjord, you cycle through Sandvika and Asker to Drammen, enjoying wide views and charming coastal towns such as Holmestrand, Horten, and Åsgårdstrand, with Viking burial mounds and the Edvard Munch Museum. A ferry takes you to Strömstad, before continuing to Fredrikstad with its historic fortress and the car-free island of Hankø. On the return ride via Moss to Oslo, you pass quiet country roads, picturesque villages, and old manor houses – always accompanied by the gentle light over the fjord.

Itinerary at a glance

Crisp fjord air, wide Nordic landscapes, and the meeting of water, forest, and coastal life define this cycling adventure. Experience the tranquility of nature alongside the vibrant character of the towns and villages lining the Oslofjord.

The city is renowned for its vibrant cultural scene and high quality of life. With numerous museums, parks, and bike paths, it’s the perfect destination for both culture and nature enthusiasts.

You leave Oslo along the fjord’s shoreline and cycle through the elegant suburbs of Sandvika and Asker, where small squares and cafés offer a welcome pause. Wide views over the water open up again and again, while hidden beaches invite a refreshing swim. You follow quiet secondary roads to Lier, before the Drammenselva River guides you straight into the heart of Drammen.

The Drammenselva River gently guides you out of the city. Beyond Sande, rolling hills appear, before the fjord comes back into view. In Holmestrand, the harbor promenade offers a relaxing spot for a break. Further north, on the Karljohansvern peninsula near Horten, you’ll discover an impressive museum complex that tells the story of Norway’s maritime past and still holds cultural and historical significance today.

The route begins along the fjord’s shoreline, offering sweeping, panoramic views. In Borre, admire the striking Viking burial mounds. Soon after, you arrive in Åsgårdstrand, where Edvard Munch drew his inspiration; his former home now serves as a museum. In Tønsberg, the Oseberg Ship commands attention at the harbor. Riding through fields and quaint villages, you continue to Sandefjord, from where a ferry carries you across to the Swedish east coast at Strömstad.

A transfer takes you and your bicycles to Fredrikstad, where the well-preserved fortress with its bastions and wooden houses is a highlight. From there, you’ll cycle to the coast, with the car-free island of Hankø offering a rewarding detour. Finally, you reach Moss. Once an industrial center, the town today is culturally vibrant, shaped by galleries and countless swimming spots along the water.

From Moss, you’ll cycle along quiet country roads and bike paths, passing historic estates and charming villages where cafés invite you for a sweet rest stop. The fjord accompanies you once more, offering stunning views, before you arrive in Oslo. Here, modern architecture, creative urban neighborhoods, and historic landmarks such as the Royal Palace come together to create a diverse and captivating cityscape—a fitting finale to your journey.
