Schaffhausen Rhine Falls

Thanks to the well-developed and mostly flat Lake Constance Cycle Path, you’ll enjoy smooth and scenic riding every day through one of the most beautiful vacation regions in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Your adventure begins in Constance, the historic Council City. In the days to come, you’ll explore the Höri Peninsula, the hidden treasures of Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls, the medieval charm of Meersburg, the Zeppelin legacy of Friedrichshafen, the cultural flair of Bregenz—and so much more. So what are you waiting for? Lake Constance is calling!

Itinerary at a glance

The spectacular Rhine Falls, the fascinating pile-dwelling museum in Uhldingen, and the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen are just a few of the many highlights around Lake Constance. Along this active loop tour, you’ll also discover the culinary delights of the lake’s neighboring countries.

Take the opportunity to visit Mainau Island, stroll through the old town of Constance, or explore the aquariums at the SEA LIFE Center and the Archaeological State Museum.

Following the shore of the Lower Lake, you’ll reach Stein am Rhein, known for its fresco-adorned medieval houses. Crossing the border between Germany and Switzerland several times, you’ll arrive in the cantonal capital of Schaffhausen, overlooked by the impressive Munot Fortress and celebrated for its residents’ friendly competition to create the most elaborate bay windows. Just a few kilometers downstream, a boat ride takes you to the rocky island at the heart of the thundering Rhine Falls.

You follow the Rhine back to Stein am Rhein and continue around the artists’ peninsula of Höri, eventually arriving in Radolfzell. The Höri was once home not only to Hermann Hesse but also to Otto Dix, who both made it their chosen residence. After Radolfzell, you cross the Bodanrück ridge, briefly losing sight of the lake. But not for long — at Bodman, you’ll reach the Überlinger See, the northern arm of Lake Constance. From there, the route follows the shoreline all the way to Überlingen.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Überlingen promenade before embarking on today’s stage and one of the most scenic along the lake. A day filled with highlights awaits: the pilgrimage church of Birnau, the Pfahlbauten Museum in Uhldingen, Meersburg’s Old Castle, and the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen all lie en route to Lindau, the renowned island town. You can choose to spend the night in either Lindau or Bregenz, famous for its spectacular lakeside stage.

Today you begin with a cycle through the Rhine Delta nature reserve, where the Alpine Rhine flows into Lake Constance. At Altenrhein, you cross into Switzerland and follow the lakeshore, passing through the charming towns of Arbon and Romanshorn before returning to Constance. The route is flat and, aside from stronger west winds, easy to handle. Along the way, you’ll come across several inviting swimming spots where you can take a refreshing dip.

After breakfast, you set off on your own journey home or choose to extend your stay and explore a little longer

Difficulty Level

The stages are mostly flat, with some gentle hills, and run primarily on dedicated, asphalted cycle paths close to the lake. In a few places, there are short non-asphalted sections, and near Friedrichshafen, the path runs alongside the main road.
