Gherkins Cycle Path
Spree Forest romantic on the Gherkins Cycle Path.

Arrival Cottbus
Individual arrival. The metropolitan city in the Lausitz region is one of Germany’s greenest cities with several parks. The Branitz Park, laid out by Prince Pückler, the castle, the pyramids, and the old town with its fortress and fascinating architecture are definitely worth seeing. There are many restaurants to choose from to round out your evening.
Burg, the gate to the Spree Forest is reached quickly. A short sidetrip to the museum of white storks is recommended. The route brings you to Lehde, the famous village in Spree Forest with his origin character. Many farm houses are reachable only by pedestrian bridges or by boat. The most important transport vehicle still is the boat. The open air museum is worth a visit.
You leave Lübbenau but not before enjoying the varied shops at one of the little ports. In Lübben you reach the Lower Spree Forest. You have now to decide to cycle via Golßen or taking the route via Köthener See. An excursion to the Tropical Island (to be organized by your own) would be worth it
The lakes Neuendorfer and Groß Leuthener See offer lots of bathing fun before you cycle to the most beautiful village within the Lower Spree Forest – Schlepzig. Here many attractions are waiting – a regional Museum of farmers, a private brewery, the information center Spree Forest and some nice locations to drink and eat something. Passing the wonderful landscape of lakes you cycle back to Lübben.
If you want you can have a paddle tour with a canoe to experience the Spree Forest from the river side (organized by yourselves) for one or two hours. With your bike you cycle then till Burg. You may want to take a small detour through Alt Zauche to Straupitz and visit the church conceptualized by the late architect, Schinkel. The linseed oil mill is also a great point of interest.
You cycle on the former Spree Forest train trail. You pass the stork village Dissen with the interesting museum of local history. You experience the successful renaturation of the Spree between Dissen and Maiberg. Then you arrive in Peitz an old fortress town and cycle through the lakes of Peitz. Before reaching Cottbus you should take a look into the brown coal mining Lakoma.
