Family-friendly cycling tour along the Tauern cycle path from Krimml to Salzburg through Austria and Germany. Daily stages of 25-35 km on signposted, mostly asphalted paths with flat to hilly terrain. Highlights include Europe's largest waterfalls in Krimml, swimming in Lake Zell, the mystical Seisenberg Gorge, and Salzburg's attractions including Mozart's birthplace and Hellbrunn Palace. Challenging difficulty requires good basic fitness and cycling skills.

The Hohe Tauern National Park gives its name to this beautiful cycle path. The views of the snow-capped peaks will delight you right from the very start. The Salzach, Saalach and Inn river valleys will guide you past a wide range of flora and fauna, authentic cultural and culinary delights as well as past truly genuine customs. This impressive diversity offered up by the Tauern Cycle Path ensures that all your senses are truly awakened. The daily stages are well-suited for families and leave enough time in the day for breaks and sight-seeing.

Your cycling vacation begins in the picturesque village of Krimml, where, upon arrival, a visit to the waterfalls is recommended. The first stage takes you to Stuhlfelden in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Along the way, you'll pass through Mittersill with the National Park Worlds Museum.

Passing through Kaprun, you'll discover Lake Zell and the picturesque village of Maria Alm. The iconic village church, set against the backdrop of the Steinernes Meer, offers an ideal photo opportunity. Meanwhile, the summer toboggan run at Biberg is not only for kids. Between Saalfelden and Unken, the scenic Seisenbergklamm awaits you before you wrap up the final kilometers of your cycling adventure in the festival city of Salzburg.

  • The Krimml Waterfalls: With a thunderous roar, the water plunges 380 meters, establishing the Krimml Falls as the largest in Europe. The natural spectacle at your starting point is equally awe-inspiring and not to be missed. A roughly four-kilometer hiking trail runs along the waterfalls, providing excellent perspectives.
  • Attractions for young and old: In addition to the stunning natural landscape, this route has plenty of fun and action in store. Take a dip in Lake Zell, experience the summer toboggan run at Biberg, or visit the Berger chocolate factory – there's something for everyone. Make a stop at the outskirts of Salzburg at Hellbrunn Palace and delight in the 400-year-old water features.
  • The Mozart city of Salzburg: At your destination, you‘ll have well and truly earned a delicious Austrian specialty, be it Salzburger Nockerl or apple strudel. Afterwards, you will still have enough energy to explore the world-famous old town, visit the House of Nature or climb up to Hohensalzburg Fortress.

The Tauern Cycle Path spans 300 kilometers from Krimml to Passau. During this Eurobike cycling tour, you'll cover about 150 kilometers of this route. The segment from Krimml to Salzburg is well-suited for both families and recreational cyclists seeking to savor not just the physical activity but also the scenery, culture, and culinary experiences. The Tauern Cycle Path, with its picturesque valleys, primarily features a flat route. The individual stages range from 25 to 35 kilometers in length.

Itinerary at a glance

The Krimml waterfalls, a true natural spectacle, await you. Jump into Lake Zell and explore the mystical Seisenbergklamm gorge. To end the week, visit the House of Nature in Salzburg.

Take a walk today to see Europe’s highest waterfalls.

Leaving the Krimml waterfalls behind you, you will cycle along the Salzach river. From the bike path, you can see the snow-capped mountains. The valley gets wider and wider allowing you to comfortably ride over green meadow to Mittersill and Stuhlfelden. As you are in the National Park, you can also visit the “Nationalparkwelten” (National Park Worlds) museum.

From Oberpinzgau we continue towards Mittelpinzgau. The region here knows how to impress with its particularly lush flora and fauna. Authentic cuisine and unadulterated customs make this region particularly lovable. Once in Kaprun, a visit to the high mountain reservoirs is a special experience.

Take the opportunity for a refreshing dip in Lake Zell. You will soon arrive in Saalfelden having cycled via the castle village of Maishofen and Maria Alm with its well-known pilgrimage church. The summer toboggan run is great fun for kids and adults.

The cycle path along the Saalach river leads you to the impressive Seisenbergklamm gorge and the Lamprechtshöhle (Europe’s deepest cave). The well-known chocolate manufacturer “Berger” is located in Lofer. Re-energised, you cycle a little further to the tranquil village of Unken.

You continue on the bike path running along the Saalach into the little German corner. Here, the next sweet temptation awaits - Konditorei Reber, a cake shop. You are sure to have burnt the extra calories by the time you arrive in Salzburg.  Your children will love the water games at Hellbrunn Palace. Plan time for a visit to Mozart’s birthplace too.

The Tauern Cycle Path is continuously signposted and runs on quiet, asphalted cycle paths and country roads. The cycling stages are between 25 and 35 km long and the topography ranges from flat to hilly. We recommend that children have a good basic level of fitness and good cycling skills (including safety in traffic).
