Tauern-Cycle Path for families

Cycling through Alpine scenery to Salzburg.

The Salzach and the Saalach run their course through the flat valley between the impressive Hohen Tauern mountains and the district of Salzburg. The river is a great place for families to cycle and it is also very diverse. You can visit the Krimmler waterfalls (the highest in Europe) and can go along the Salzach and Saalach past lush green meadows and snow covered mountains until you reach Salzburg, the festival city. The pleasant stages are ideal for families, who would like to go on a cycling holiday for the first time but also offer more experienced cyclists time to explore other things in addition to doing the cycling tour. It is good to have excess time though because in almost every place you go past there is a natural lake, a pool or a free time park to play and splash around in. A bit of time should also be used to explore the nature along the way on route or to go to the ‘Hohe Tauern’ national park centre. Stop off along the way at some of the excellent guest houses and enjoy the Austrian food like ‘Pinzgauer Kasnocken’, ‘Kaspressknödel’ and ‘Salzburger Nockerl’. Whether it be the food, the culture or the nature: you are bound to be charmed by this cycle tour along the Tauern cycle path!

Itinerary

Arrive in Krimml and move into your accommodation. The rental bikes (if booked) are in your hotel. From afar, you can spot them and marvel: the Krimml waterfalls! But don’t let that suffice, make sure you go and pay a visit to the largest waterfalls in Europe. Water crashes down about 400m. Walk along the path and admire the natural spectacle.

Take a last look at the roaring waterfalls and then get on your bike. You cycle along lush green meadows down to Pinzgau, a little village with traditional charm. You can jump into the warm crystal clear water here at ‘Kristallbad’. You then continue on easy cycle paths to Neukirchen am Großvenediger. You always stay close to the River Salzach. If you haven’t done so already, you should have a swim here in the large lake. Afterwards, you cycle to Mittersill, today’s destination, via Hollersbach where there is an activity centre.

approx. 30 km

Plan for a trip to the Hohe Tauern national park centre because you can discover so much about the region and the fauna in the 3D cinema there. Then you cycle through the bright green valleys that are surrounded by snow covered mountains, which are over 3000m tall. In Stuhlfelden, ‘ an archery village’ you can either grab a bow and arrow or jump into the swimming pool at the leisure centre. In Niedernsill you also have the opportunity to have fun in the water. Go past the ‘Fun-Park’ in  Piesendorf and then head to Kaprun. Those who like spas should take a detour to the Tauern spa. Afterwards you cycle leisurely to Zell am See.

approx. 35 km

The crystal clear Lake Zell is really close. Head quickly to one of the lidos and jump into the refreshing water. How does renting a surfboard sound to do some paddling? Once you are ready to move on, you cycle along the lake’s edge to Maishofen. Maybe you will have time for a round of bike golf, which is scattered around Maishofen. You cycle on well-built paths past grazing cows in lush meadows to Saalfelden.  If the weather is hot, you should take another break by Lake Ritzen. Saalfelden itself has plenty to offer including a climbing hall.

approx. 20 km

Look forward to the impressive and unspoilt nature along the cycle path. In the Saalach valley, the path gets narrower. You will get a view of the ‘Steinernes Meer’ and you will be entirely surrounded by mountains, which steeply ascend. It looks like something out of Middle Earth. Along the way there are some real forces of nature. The ‘Lamprechtshöhlen’ (caves) and the Seisenbergklamm in Weißbach, with a fixed-rope route, are bound to be the highlights of your day as they give you a real sense of adventure. You cycle to Lofer where you can try regional specialities like Pinzgauer Kasnocken or a Kaspressknödl, which you have definitely earnt!

approx. 25 km

In Lofer you can jump into an outdoor pool once more. How about a round of walking golf, which in principle is the same as bike golf - just without the bike before you continue on your way? You cycle through the tranquil Saalach valley along the wide river Saalach until you reach Unken. You can enjoy the wonderful view of the surrounding mountains from the Alpenbad leisure centre. Even along the route though, you can admire the impressive mountains around you. Shortly after Lake Saalach you reach today’s destination, Bad Reichenhall. Depending on how you have spent the day already, you may have time to rest your tired legs in the warm thermal water at the Rupertus spa.

approx. 25 km

You end your tour today in Salzburg and its time to say farewell - ‘Lebewohl’. You will go past Salzburg’s open-air museum with its famous heritage railway. You will cycle through Gois and Viehhausen to your final destination: the famous Mozart town, Salzburg. You can expect a lot of culture and tradition here. Stroll along the famous Getreidegasse, visit the castle or go up the Kapuzinerberg and have a view across the rooftops of this wonderful town.

approx. 25 km

Your cycle tour ends today in the wonderful city of Salzburg. There is a lot to see: the famous water games, the large zoo or the great cafes in the centre of town. Why not spend a few more days here in Salzburg?
