Perhaps you have already driven through South Tyrol on your way south – on the motorway, by car. Perhaps you have already guessed how beautiful the landscape is between Tyrol and the sea. But a cycling holiday in South Tyrol will definitely open up a whole new world for you. Between Merano and Lake Garda there are fantastic cycle paths that offer you exciting rides – past ice worlds, mountain ranges, orchards and vineyards. Let South Tyrol literally melt in your mouth, because Caldaro wines and fruit are world famous. Would you like to swap your car for a Eurobike bike? Wonderful, because this cycle tour is ideal for newbies!

Always along the Adige, always a little downhill – and therefore with a certain feeling of tailwind: this is the bike route from Merano to Lake Garda. The seven-day cycle tour through South Tyrol is particularly popular with leisure cyclists and beginners, as the route is easy and offers enough time for sightseeing and relaxation.

  • Cycling holiday for beginners and families: The route from Merano to Lake Garda mainly leads along flat cycle paths, so the cycling holiday is suitable for all those who are undertaking a longer cycle tour for the first time. Children will also enjoy the route.
  • South Tyrolean city highlights: Merano, Trento, Bolzano, Torbole – you can get very close to the beauty of South Tyrolean cities on your cycling holiday. Don’t forget your camera!
  • Culinary delights in all their richness: Fruit and vegetables grow in all their glory on the lush South Tyrolean soil – from the grapes to the Venosta apples.

The starting point of the cycle tour is the Mediterranean spa town of Merano. The best way to enjoy the sunset on the promenade is with a glass of wine! The next day, the week of cycling begins with a ride on the Venosta Railway towards Resia pass. The daily tours are between 30 and 70 kilometres long and follow mostly flat paths. Only smaller climbs to Lake Caldaro and Lake Garda can be expected.

Experience Northern Italy in a different way – on a bike!

Itinerary at a glance

Slightly downhill and towards the south, the route is perfect for beginners. Merano, Bolzano and Trento enchant with pretty old towns, in the Venosta region castles and palaces tower over the path lined with orchards.

Travel documents and rental bikes (if booked) are to be found at the hotel.

Hotel (example): Villa Laurus

Take the train line "Venosta" towards the mountain pass ‘Resia’. From the town of Malles onwards to Glurns (perfectly preserved Medieval city wall). Via the Montani ruins past Silandro and heading south to Merano. Castles and palaces dot your way or tower high above (i.e. Juval castle owned by the Austrian mountaineer Reinhold Messner). While cycling enjoy marvellous views of the impressive ‘Ortler’ massif and the "Stilfserjoch". This stage can be shortened if you wish.

Hotel (example): Villa Laurus

Via Lana (Schnatterpeck altar) and through numerous orchards and vineyards in the area of the South Tyrolian wine route, past several well-fortified castles, palaces and ruins onwards to Appiano and along the base of Sigmundskron castle (Messner-Mountain museum) to Bolzano (pergolas, "Ötzi" museum).

Hotel (example): La Briosa

There are two ways to get to Lake Caldaro: either the slightly hilly way on the bike path via Appiano or on the flat cycle path along the Adige dam until the charming wine village Ora.

Hotel (example): Villa Groff

From Ora you continue on the cycle path along the Adige dam. The "Salurner Klause" is the end of the German speaking part of South Tyrol. The route leads you through the famous Trentino wine regions into the ancient diocesan town Trento (lovely old part of town, cathedral, Buonconsiglio palace).

Hotel (example): Grand Hotel

Shortly after the old Tyrolian border town of Rovereto, our cycling tour leaves the Adige valley. In Mori you will taste the world famous pistachio ice-cream in the Gelateria Bologna or a freshly squeezed fruit juice. After the only ascent worth mentioning (approx. 150 m)over the small San Giovanni pass, the path leads downhill along the lake towards Torbole. The cycle tour either ends in Riva or Torbole.

Take some time to explore the lovely spa town, stroll through the botanical gardens, or unwind at the thermal baths.

Hotel (example): Villa Laurus

Hop on the Venosta Railway toward Resia Pass and start your journey from Malles to Glurns, where the fully preserved medieval city walls await your admiration. Along the route, castles and palaces—including Juval Castle, home to the famed mountaineer Reinhold Messner—dot the landscape or rise majestically above it. From the saddle, soak in stunning views of the mighty Ortler massif and the breathtaking Stelvio Pass. The route can be easily shortened to suit your own pace and preferences.

Hotel (example): Villa Laurus

Cycling through Lana—home to the Schnatterpeck Altar—and winding through countless orchards and vineyards along the South Tyrolean Wine Road, you’ll make your way to Eppan. Castles and palaces line the route, and just before reaching Bolzano, you’ll encounter Sigmundskron Castle, which houses the Messner Mountain Museum. Once in Bolzano, take time to explore the historic town, with its charming arcades and the famous Ötzi Museum.

Hotel (example): La Briosa

There are two ways to reach Lake Caldaro. One option takes you along a gently rolling new bike path through Eppan to the charming wine village of Ora. Alternatively, you can follow the flat route along the Adige River levee.

Hotel (example): Villa Groff

From Ora, follow the bike path along the Adige River levee until you reach the Salurn Gorge, where the German-speaking region of South Tyrol ends. The route continues through renowned Trentino wine regions before arriving in the historic bishop’s city of Trento, with its charming old town, cathedral, and Buonconsiglio Castle.

Hotel (example): Grand Hotel

The route carries you onward to the historic Tyrolean border town of Rovereto, where you leave the Adige Valley behind. In Mori, indulge in the famous pistachio ice cream or a freshly pressed fruit juice at Gelateria Bologna. After the only significant climb—about 150 meters (roughly 490 feet)—over the gentle Passo San Giovanni, you’ll enjoy a refreshing descent down to the lake at Torbole.
