River Adige at Trento

South Tyrol is more than just a place to visit—it’s a region to truly discover. The route from Merano to Lake Garda provides an excellent introduction. Follow the Adige River to Bolzano, where you can visit Ötzi and savor a cappuccino under charming arcades. On the way south, you’ll pass vineyards and historic ruins, including the renowned Sigmundskron Castle. In the picturesque wine villages, pause to sample local wines before reaching the bishop’s city of Trento. The Mediterranean landscape accompanies your final kilometers along Italy’s largest lake, with idyllic promenades and rolling hills creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

Take a leisurely walk along Merano's promenade, just as Empress Sissi once did, or indulge in a soothing spa massage. Your initial leg of the journey spans around 45 kilometers to Bolzano, guiding you through a scenic landscape of vineyards and orchards. Along the way, you'll also have the chance to explore Sigmundskron Castle, where the Messner Mountain Museum awaits.

Day 3 brings you the longest stretch of your journey, leading you to the beautiful old town of Trento. You've left behind the German-speaking part of South Tyrol, and the unmistakable Mediterranean atmosphere surrounds you. Take a break on the final leg in Rovereto and explore the historic city center before you cover the last kilometers toward Lake Garda. At Passo San Giovanni, you'll encounter a slight incline, and then you'll cycle with a view of the lake to reach your destination.

  • Enjoy a break at Waltherplatz in Bolzano: In the midst of the beautifully landscaped Piazza, a statue of its namesake, Walther von der Vogelweide, stands proudly. Waltherplatz is a popular meeting place adorned with bars, cafes, and restaurants.
  • The historical Trento: The northern Italian city boasts a history spanning over 2,000 years. The narrow streets of the old town are brimming with art and culture. Taking a photo in front of the Neptune Fountain is an absolute must, and we highly recommend the ascent to the Castello del Buonconsiglio as well.
  • Pistachio ice cream on Lake Garda: After covering many kilometers, let us treat you to a scoop of pistachio ice cream. The Gelateria Bologna in Mori is renowned not only for its top-notch gelato but also for its charming Art Nouveau villa. Now, you're just a few kilometers away from your destination and the sparkling waters of Lake Garda.

Throughout this journey, you'll cover approximately 160 kilometers. On a cycling tour, you have the opportunity to experience your vacation destination in a truly unique way. You'll uncover hidden gems, traverse the landscape at a leisurely pace, and gain insight into the local way of life, offering a special and immersive experience. With Eurobike, cycling for pleasure means that you still have plenty of time for all of this in addition to the stages. Your luggage will then be waiting for you at the next overnight stop.

Cycling through Lana—home to the Schnatterpeck Altar—and winding through countless orchards and vineyards along the South Tyrolean Wine Road, you’ll make your way to Eppan. Castles and palaces line the route, and just before reaching Bolzano, you’ll encounter Sigmundskron Castle, which houses the Messner Mountain Museum. Once in Bolzano, take time to explore the historic town, with its charming arcades and the famous Ötzi Museum.

Leaving Bolzano, the route follows the Eisack River before soon reaching the Adige. The scenic bike path then leads through fragrant orchards all the way to Salurn, where the German-speaking South Tyrol ends. From here, vineyards producing the robust red wine “Teroldego” line the way to the charming old town of Trento.

The route carries you onward to the historic Tyrolean border town of Rovereto, where you leave the Adige Valley behind. In Mori, indulge in the famous pistachio ice cream or a freshly pressed fruit juice at Gelateria Bologna. After the only significant climb—about 150 meters (roughly 490 feet)—over the gentle Passo San Giovanni, you’ll enjoy a refreshing descent down to the lake at Torbole. The cycling tour concludes in either Riva or Torbole.
