Romance & Wine
Discover the enchanting town of Beaune, renowned for its famous wine cellars, and journey along the scenic Canal de Bourgogne. Savor the tranquility of country roads, passing by exquisite vineyards, majestic castles, and Romanesque churches. The Burgundy region not only boasts culinary delights like exceptional wines and gourmet cuisine but also a rich tapestry of cultural and natural beauty.
Beaune, renowned for its excellent wines and charming city center, is the perfect starting point for a journey through Burgundy. You’ll cycle along an old railway line to Buxy, with a visit to Château de Rully beforehand. The historic architecture is mirrored in the castles and monasteries you’ll encounter along the route, including the renowned Cluny.
On day 4, your destination is Mâcon, which you reach by passing through the cycle tunnel at Bois Clair. From there, you’ll travel through picturesque Louhans, reach the Saône River, and continue on to Chalon-sur-Saône. On the final day of this stage, you’ll again follow the river, which provides stunning scenic views. Once back in Beaune, savor the unique charm of the city and celebrate a wonderful vacation with a glass of wine.
Cycling along the old railroad line of the “Voie Verte” is a highlight in itself. The individual stages range from 35 to 65 kilometers in length and are easy to handle. Each day, after a hearty breakfast, you'll set off on your two-wheeled adventure and spend the night in charming hotels.
Picturesque paths winding along rivers and canals, as well as through vineyards, are characteristic of a cycling tour in Burgundy. Enchanting towns and charming castle estates will accompany you along your route.
Welcome by the tour guide in the late afternoon. Beaune is wine-capital of Burgundy and has a picturesque old town. Visit „Hôtel-Dieu“, the old hospital of poor.
You cycle via Chagny to castle Rully, a medieval fortress in midst of vineyards. Join the Voie Verte, an old railway track converted into a cycle path and cycle to Buxy. The picturesque little town surrounded by vineyards.
Enjoy your easy and relaxed route on Voie Verte, just now and then with a very small climb. Your next stop is Cormatin with the biggest castle of Burgundy followed by Cluny, the famous monastery. The church of Cluny was at times the biggest church of Christendom.
Through the railway tunnel of Bois Clair (longest bike tunnel in Europe, length 1, 6 km). Afterwards you cross the boarder to Macônnais. The last 20 km you cycle relaxed into the valley of Macôn. We recommend visiting the old city and historic bridge. Especially in the evening, you have awesome views from the new promenade next to river Saône.
You cycle through „Bresse“to Ferme-de-la-Foret, a typical farm of the region. Louhans is capital of Bresse and is justly named “the most beautiful detour of France”.
Today you should stop in St. Loup-de-Varennes. Here photography was invented and the local museum of photography shows many exhibits from this time. In the afternoon, you meet again with river Saône and reach Chalon-sur-Saône, second largest city of Burgundy with important river port for the export-goods wine and corn.
On your last cycle day, you enjoy the idyllic river valley of Saône, a 480 km long river, springing in the Vosges and mouthing into river Rhone near Lyon. When you reach Beaune, take your time for a stroll through the picturesque little town.
Routes partly using the „Voie Verte“(old railway tracks or bridle paths along canals), thus avoiding climbs. Otherwise you are using cycle paths off the traffic and minor roads.
