Two cyclists on a bridge in the forest at Easter Lake

Munich Lakes

Isar Cycle Path and Bavarian Lakes

7 Days / 6 Nights

Two cyclists on a bridge in the forest at Easter Lake

Over seven days this tour offers a white and blue attitude to life between a pulsating cultural metropolis and unique nature in Bavaria. Let yourself be enchanted by the uniqueness of Munich, where tradition and modernity meet and result in a grandiose interplay. Enjoy culinary delicacies such as the world-famous beer, delicious pastries or typical Bavarian roast pork. Let yourself be won over by new ideas, for example when quinoa, veal sausage burgers and organic beer mix with the classics on the menu in the beer gardens.

It starts in Munich, where, in addition to the cuisine already mentioned, the beautiful baroque old town with the Marienplatz and Frauenkirchen, the Olympiapark or Nymphenburg Palace await you. The Pinakotheken is a top spot for art lovers and those who like to stroll with surely find what they are looking for in the shopping mile between Kaufingerstreße and Neuhauser Straße or in the creative district of Schwabing.

Passing Lake Starnberg and numerous traditional villages, you go to Murnau am Staffelsee and via Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Mittenwald and Wallgau, a former rafting village. Then you continue on to Bad Tölz, where you can follow in the footsteps of the famous German tv programme ‘Der Bulle von Tölz’. Imposing mountain ranges, steep gorges, green alpine pastures and the turquoise-blue water of the Isar are just a few of the highlights in addition to the beautiful lakes of this cycle tour, which comes to an end in Munich.

  • The English Garden in Munich: Monopteros, Chinese Tower and much more - you could spend at least the whole day in the English Garden alone. It’s served Munich residents as a place to relax since 1972. The panoramic view from the temple-like Monopteros should not be missed, afterwards, the beer garden at the Seehaus, for example, invites you to take a break.
  • Swimming in the Bavarian lakes: Crystal clear water as far as the eye can see – it must be tried! Treat yourself to numerous breaks to swim along the ‘Munich Lakes Tour’, there are plenty of opportunities. Explore the beaches on the Staffelsee, which, by the way, is a lake with the most islands in the foothills of the Alps. Swim with a view of the Wallberg in Tegernsee and enjoy the deep blue water of the Sylvenstein reservoir.
  • Magnificent views of the Zugspitze: At 2,962m, the Zugspitze in the Wetterstein Mountains is the highest mountain in Germany. On day 3, the tour leads to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, from where you can take the Zugspitzbahn (on your own) to the summit and enjoy the breathtaking Alpine panorama.
  • Bavarian customs in Bad Tölz: The spa town is not only known for the widely popular television series, but also for its historical visitors – immerse yourself in the fascinating history of this colourful baroque town.

A tour that you can carry out calmly and enjoy to the fullest. The wonderful cycle paths and side streets are mostly flat or with a slight incline, cycling on main roads is an absolute exception.

itinerary at a glance

In addition to Lake Tegernsee and co., we recommend the Sylvenstein Reservoir - follow the turquoise blue Isar and let yourself be enchanted! Also a ride with the Zugspitzbahn to the highest mountain in Germany will inspire you.

Welcome briefing and bike fitting. The capital city of Bavaria is awaiting you and invites you to visit its many attractions (English Garden, Town Hall, Hofbräuhaus,…)

From Munich, the tour starts with a bike ride through Forstenrieder Park to Lake Starnberg. Then you will cycle on the lakeside road to Seeshaupt. You will continue on wonderful ways through rustic Bavarian towns, past the Osterseen lakes and Lake Riegsee to Murnau am Staffelsee.

Hotel (example): Griesbräu

First, you will cycle through the natural reserve called Murnauer Moos (largest swamp area of Central Europe). Later, you will continue your tour through unspoiled nature following the River Loisach to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The stage is intentionally brief. Therefore, there is still enough time for an individual trip with the Zugspitzbahn, a mountain railway. At an altitude of 2962 meters, you will have a wonderful view of the Alps.

Hotel (example): Vier Jahreszeiten

By bike you cycle from Garmisch Partenkirchen via Klais to the beautiful Barmsee. Afterwards you have the option of cycling directly to your overnight accomodation or taking a detour via Mittenwald and Scharnitz to the source of Isar. A total of 300 metres in altitude are covered to Scharnitz, from there slightly uphill through wild and romantiv gorges and lush alpine meadows to the source of the Isar. Afterwards, you will cycle back through a sunny valley where you will have a marvellous panoramic view of the mountains of Karwendel and Wettersteingebirge, passing Mittenwald and finally arriving in Wallgau – a place where the Bavarian tradition is still a part of everyday life.

Hotel (example): Gasthof Post

Passing the Isarwinkel, you will follow the crystal-clear, turquoise waters of the impressive Lake Sylvenstein. Cycling through charming landscapes, you will pass Lenggries and finally arrive in Bad Tölz. The location at the crossroads of two trade routes - the River Isar and the old salt route from Reichenhall to Allgäu - quickly became a thriving trading centre. The ornate mansions testify the golden age.

Hotel (example): Kolberbräu

The Isar bike way leads you from Bad Tölz over Geretsried and Wolfratshausen directly to Grünwald. After a few short climbs you will arrive back in Bavaria’s state capital Munich, where you can explore its countless sights and attractions.
