Cycle path between flowering meadows and individual trees near Lake Starnberg

The region surrounding Bavaria’s capital captivates with numerous lakes set against the majestic Alpine backdrop. Cycling here is a true pleasure as you pass through charming, traditional villages and towns, pause in welcoming beer gardens nestled under leafy trees, and relax on tranquil lakeside docks. The journey begins amidst the vibrant energy of Munich, a bustling city alive with lively restaurants, shops, museums, and historic architecture. Along this loop tour, the towns display a rich, colorful baroque character—you’ll spend nights in places like Bad Tölz, by Lake Starnberg, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Wallgau. And naturally, the lakes that lend this tour its name take center stage—from the small, serene Barmsee to the expansive Tegernsee, countless memorable moments by the water await.

There is a lot to explore at the start in Munich. The city impresses with its diversity on the one hand, but also with typical Bavarian cosiness. Explore one of the numerous museums, stroll through the Viktualienmarkt and be sure to stop in a beer garden.

You continue to Murnau am Staffelsee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is not only known for winter sport, and Gmund and Tagernsee where a wonderful panorama rewards you. Explore the enchanting villages, the ‘Murnauer Moos’ nature reserve and enjoy the views of the Karawendel and Wetterstein mountains.

  • The English Garden in Munich: With 375 hectares, it is one of the largest parks in the world and offers plenty of space to relax and slow down. But the area also has a lot to offer historically and culturally. Visit, for example, the Chinese Tower, the Rumfordschlössl or the Japanese Tea House. Tip: Watch the professional surfers at the Eisbachwelle at the southern end of the English Garden.
  • Swimming in the Bavarian lakes: Treat yourself to countless dops in the cool, and above all, clear water – the Bavarian lakes impress with their good water quality. In addition to Tefernsee and Lake Starnberg, the smaller Osterseen or Riegsee await with equally beautiful bathing areas.
  • Magnificent views of the Zugspitze: If you cycle the stage to Garmisch-Partenkirchen on day 4, turn your gaze to the southwest towards the imposing Zugspitze massif. If you want to go up high, you can take the cable car (on your own) to an altitude of 2,962m.
  • Bavarian customs in Bad Tölz: Whether beautiful traditional clothing, richly decorated house facades or music – in the traditional Bavarian cities around Bad Tölz there is a white and blue attitude to life. Already know this? Every year at the beginning of November, the Leonhardifahrt, a horse pilgrimage in honor of the patron saint of farm animals, takes place on richly decorated carriages.

Thanks to the wonderful panoramas and the mostly flat terrain with few climbs, the Munich Lakes Tour is a cycle tour for leisure cyclists. The trip is also available for families.

You’ll begin by cycling through the Murnauer Moos nature reserve, the largest moorland in Central Europe. Pristine nature accompanies you as you follow the Loisach River to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you’ll cycle through Klais to the beautiful Barmsee. From there, you can either ride directly to your overnight stop or take a detour through Mittenwald and Scharnitz to visit the source of the Isar River. You’ll climb a total of 300 meters (about 1,000 feet) to Scharnitz, then continue gently uphill through wild, romantic gorges and lush alpine meadows to the Isar spring. On the return, you’ll follow the sunny high valley with stunning views of the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountain ranges, passing through Mittenwald on your way to Wallgau, a village where Bavarian traditions are still very much alive.

Passing through the Isarwinkel region, you’ll follow the crystal-clear, turquoise waters to the impressive Sylvensteinsee. From there, the route continues through picturesque landscapes via Lenggries to the charming town of Bad Tölz.
