Do you have questions about this tour?
A cycling tour through the Munich Lake District immerses you in the heart of Bavarian life—defined by breathtaking alpine backdrops, time-honored villages, and a warm, welcoming spirit. Scenic bike paths trace the shores of crystal-clear Lake Starnberg and the charming Ammersee, offering sweeping views of the distant Alps. Hidden gems like Lake Kochel reveal their own quiet magic and irresistible charm. What’s a visit to Bavaria without a taste of the local flavors? Savor regional specialties and enjoy a stein or two in a shaded beer garden—especially with views of Benediktbeuern Abbey. The towns of Murnau, Wallgau, and Bad Tölz dazzle with their ornate buildings, while Munich invites you to soak in its vibrant, cosmopolitan flair.
The tour starts and ends in the Bavarian metropolis of Munich. The city not only offers many sights and attractions, but also has its very own flair. Observe how tradition and modernity merge - be it in the way of life, in gastronomy or when young and old meet. As soon as you leave the city in the direction of Forstenrieder Park, you will notice the influences of nature. Peace, contemplation and relaxation alongside physical activity.
With Lake Starnberg, Lake Kochelsee and Lake Staffelsee, idyllic and sparkling water in its purest form await you on the first few days. On day 4, the tour leads through the Murnauer Moos, the largest of its kind in Central Europe at 32 km2, first to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and on to Wallgau, idyllically nestled between the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains. With the Sylvensteinsee and the Tegernsee, two more scenic highlights await before the tour continues to the charming Bad Tölz.
The idyllic Lake Starnberg and the surrounding villages have a lot to offer: Water sports, art and culture. But what you should definitely do: Enjoy - the magnificent views, the flair around the lake and the sophisticated atmosphere.
The decorated market square in Murnau: Did you know that the famous artist Wassily Kandinsky once called Murnau his home? This left a lasting impression on the town, which is still considered a meeting place for art and culture lovers today. Stroll along the beautiful market square, where galleries and studios alternate with cafés and boutiques.
The Lüftlmalerei in Bad Tölz: A walk through the beautiful "Alpine town" is a must for every visitor. Look at the colourful facades along the market square, maybe stop by the town museum or the "Bulle von Tölz" museum and admire the Calvary including the church.
The English Garden in Munich is not only home to some of the city's most famous sights (Japanese Tea House, Monopteros, Chinese Tower), but is also an oasis of relaxation. On nice days, watch the colourful hustle and bustle, listen to music or watch games and sports being played.
Five stages with a length of 60 to 85 km have to be covered. You should therefore be in good physical condition, even though the route is relatively easy as there are only a few climbs to master.
Discover Bad Tölz with its traditional architecture, the artist town of Murnau and the sophisticated flair of Lake Starnberg. In the Benediktbeuern monastery beer garden, you can enjoy a leg of pork and dumplings with a one-litre Bavarian beer.
The day begins with an information session and bike handover before you set out to explore Bavaria’s vibrant capital. Munich welcomes you with a wealth of sights—from the peaceful English Garden to the impressive Town Hall and the iconic Hofbräuhaus.
Starting in Munich, the route takes you through Forstenrieder Park—once the Wittelsbach family’s royal hunting grounds and now a 2,100-hectare haven for nature lovers. From there, you’ll pass through Gauting and follow the gently rolling Royal Bavarian Cycle Path toward Lake Ammersee. Along the way, the trail hugs the shoreline from Herrsching to Dießen before continuing along the Ammer River to Weilheim and finally reaching Lake Starnberg.
The day’s ride begins with gently rolling terrain toward Königsdorf and Bad Tölz. From there, you’ll make your way through Bad Heilbrunn to Benediktbeuern, where a stop in the monastery’s shaded beer garden is the perfect opportunity to savor a traditional stein. Refreshed, you’ll continue on to Lake Kochel before reaching Murnau on the shores of Lake Staffel.
Your day begins by cycling through the Murnauer Moos nature reserve—the largest moorland in Central Europe. From there, you’ll follow the unspoiled landscapes along the Loisach River to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The route then gently ascends along the bike path to the Isar River and winds through the sunlit high valley, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountain ranges, before arriving in Wallgau— a village where Bavarian traditions are still very much alive & well.
Following the crystal-clear, turquoise waters of the Isarwinkel, the route leads you first to Fall and then onward to Lake Sylvenstein. The scenic Tegernsee region unfolds alongside the lake, offering beautiful views as you cycle. Passing through the wild and romantic Gaißbach Valley, you’ll soon arrive in the charming town of Bad Tölz.
The Isar Cycle Path leads you through Geretsried and Wolfratshausen on the way to Grünwald. After a few more gentle climbs, you’ll arrive in Munich—the state capital—ready to be explored with its wealth of sights and attractions.
Sporty cycling tours are defined by their challenging routes. While the paths along the lakes are mostly flat, the sections in between can be hilly—you’ll cover up to 85 kilometers (about 53 miles) per day. The tour follows scenic bike paths and quiet backroads, with only short stretches on main roads. Most of the route is asphalt, with some longer sections on well-maintained gravel roads.
