Spittal - Grado - Trieste

The Alpe-Adria-Tour II.

This bike tour starts in Spittal, which is a town located on the brink of the Klagenfurt basin where the Gail river joins the Drava river. On your second day of cycling you leave Austria and head into Italy. The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region offers a very diversified landscape but also has a lot of culture to offer.

This mix of cultures is reflected in the cuisine as well. You will find alpine-Austrian, Slovenian and Venetian influences coining the gastronomic offer of this region. With the peaks of the Carnic Alps behind you, you continue along the southern side of the Alps towards the sea. Ahead of you is the Adriatic coastline with mile-long sandy beaches. Relax on your rest day in Grado, which is one of the most popular bathing resorts in Italy before you follow the sea breeze to the ancient Habsburg harbour city, Trieste.

Itinerary

You cycle along the Drau Cycle Path to Villach. From here you continue by cycling through Nötsch to Feistritz an der Gail.

Today's stage goes through Hohenthurn and Maglern to Tarvis. After Tarvis you cycle along the Alpe-Adria-Route to Moggio Udinese/Tolmezzo.

Gemona is located at the southern end of the canal valley and in the foothills of the Julian Alps. It is considered to be one of the loveliest historical places within the region. Gemona is characterised by its Santa Maria Assunta cathedral, which is definitely worth a visit.

Wine determines this route. Hills with grape-vines accompany you and invite you for a wine tasting session. Udine has been highly influenced by Venice and the place gives off a sense of peace and prudence. Whilst enjoy a coffe on the 'piazza' or whilst taking a stroll around the old town you can admire the significant architecture from the late Gothic and Renaissance periods.

Accompanied by the breeze of Scirocco you will go past landscapes with reed and water canals all the way to Grado, which is an historic fishing harbour and popular bathing resort on the Adriatic coastline.

Today you are spoilt for choice! You can either have an exciting day in Aquileia along the tracks of the Romans or you can have a relaxing day by the sea. Discover the secrets of the “second Rome” – roman ruins, ancient churches and lonesome landscapes. Alternatively you can enjoy the warm sun in the lagoon whilst sitting on a beach that runs for miles in a deckchair.

The karst accompanies you through the back country on your way to the Adriatic Sea. You follow a breathtaking beautiful coastal area. Palace Miramare is well-worth a visit before you reach the former Habsburg city, Trieste. The old harbour and trading town is a worthy finish of this bike tour. Optional: it’s possible to shorten the stage by continuing by train from Monfalcone (about 35 km + train ride, ticket not included).
