The essentials at a glance

Cycle from Krimml through Austria and Germany to Passau along the Salzach, Saalach, and Inn rivers. The route features Europe's largest waterfalls, the Hohe Tauern National Park, Mozart's Salzburg with its fortress and cathedral, and the three-river city of Passau. Medium difficulty with mostly downhill sections on paved paths. Daily distances average 50-60 km through baroque towns, historic monasteries, and scenic riverside landscapes.

From the Alps' most famous waterfalls to the “Venice of Bavaria” Cycle around 300 kilometers (about 185 miles) along the Tauern Cycle Path from Krimml to Passau. In the Hohe Tauern mountains, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks. Take a refreshing dip in Lake Zell before making a stop in Salzburg, the city of Mozart, and then follow the Inn Valley all the way to the “City of Three Rivers.” After each stage, relax in handpicked accommodations—on our Cycle Tours with Charm, you’ll stay in hotels with that special something. Along the way, not only the landscapes are full of variety—the towns and regional cuisine are, too. From Salzburg’s famous Nockerl to Innviertel dumplings and a cold Passau beer, this tour offers something for every taste.

Begin your journey in the High Tauern from the town of Krimml, reaching Zell am See as your initial destination. Even in the summer months, the lake's shores offer views of snow-capped mountain peaks, with plenty of water sports activities awaiting your participation. On your way to Lofer, iconic sights like the pointed church steeple in Maria Alm or the enchanting Seisenberg Gorge present themselves as popular photo opportunities. Salzburg adds to the dilemma – should you prioritize a visit to the fortress or explore the charming Getreidegasse first?

As you follow the course of the Inn, the terrain gradually levels out, taking you past the picturesque Burghausen, the baroque Obernberg, and the splendid Stift Reichersberg. Make sure not to overlook Schärding before gently pedaling towards the enchanting three rivers city. Here, a fusion of student ambiance, Bavarian culture, and Venetian charm awaits – a delightful conclusion to a rewarding vacation.

  • The Krimml Falls: Don't leave the starting point of this journey without visiting the famous waterfalls. After all, with a total drop of 380 meters over three stages, they are the largest in Europe. Besides, they are believed to promote health, as the water particles in the air are said to have positive effects on respiratory health. Interestingly, the waterfalls in the Hohe Tauern National Park area have been designated as particularly worthy of protection since 1984.
  • Picturesque Burghausen: The castle in Burghausen, Bavaria, stretches for over a kilometer—few worldwide can match its size, and in Central Europe, it stands as the largest castle complex.
  • The baroque town of Schärding: As you plan the final kilometers of your cycling vacation, consider making a stop in the delightful town of Schärding. The Silberzeile with its many colorful townhouses is a true feast for the eyes, while indulging in one of the numerous restaurants on the town square is a treat for the palate. Explore interesting aspects of the formative craftsmanship at the Granite Museum and visit the love-stricken Frenchman in the castle park.

The route, divided into six daily stages, features a descent of approximately 750 meters. With some stamina, you'll easily manage the distance, and the few inclines, as a reward for your efforts, reveal splendid panoramas.

You can find many tips on our information page about the Tauern Cycle Path. Upon reaching Passau, by the way, you can seamlessly transition to the popular Danube Cycle Path.

On our ‘Cycle Tours with Charm’ you can enjoy the full service of our individual active holidays while staying in very special accommodation with that extra something in the best location. That means you can look forward to luxury furnishings and decor in the local style, as well as cuisine at the highest level. Many of our hotels with charm also offer large pools and a wellness area where you can relax after a lovely day of cycling.
