Along the Adige Cycle Path to Lake Garda
This cycling tour from Lake Resia to Lake Garda descends nearly 1,500 meters through South Tyrol's stunning landscapes. The route follows well-maintained bike paths along the Adige River, passing the submerged church of Graun, Reinhold Messner's Schloss Juval, the Messner Mountain Museum at Sigmundskron fortress, and Lake Caldaro. Daily stages range from 30 to 70 km on mostly dedicated bike paths. Highlights include medieval Glurns, charming Meran, historic Bolzano, Trento's old town, and scenic orchards and vineyards.
Two lakes, as different as night and day: Reschensee and Lake Garda. What they do share is their breathtaking beauty—and they mark the start and finish of this timelessly popular cycling tour. The journey begins in northern South Tyrol, where the stunning view of Reschensee already sets the tone. Apple orchards, vineyards, castles, and palaces accompany you through the Vinschgau Valley. The lively streets and bustling piazzas of Merano and Bolzano await, before you follow the Adige River past the German-speaking border. At Lake Garda, Mediterranean charm and the spirit of “Dolce Vita” welcome you. Along the way, cultural highlights abound—be sure to visit Ötzi, the world-famous Iceman, in Bolzano.
You will cycle on beautiful bike paths mainly along the Adige River. The route will lead you from the Resia (mountain pass) almost 1,500 metres in altitude downhill to Lake Garda. However, you will have to cycle some small climbs too. Overall, you will find yourself on beautiful bike paths and country lanes. Unfortunately, moderate traffic is unavoidable on some short connecting roads.
As you cycle along the beautifully maintained paths following the Adige River, South Tyrol’s stunning scenery surrounds you at every turn. Daily stages cover between 18 and 44 miles (30 to 70 kilometers), and with nearly 4,900 feet (1,500 meters) of downhill from the Reschen Pass to Lake Garda, even beginners will find the route comfortably manageable. Only occasionally do gentle climbs add a bit of variety. For the most part, you’ll enjoy dedicated bike paths or smooth farm roads, with busy roads appearing only briefly and rarely.
