Arrival as arranged by you to Salzburg, the Mozart city. The winding alleyways and the squares make it a great place to go for a stroll. You should visit a typical café to taste some Austrian delicacies. With every step you breathe in yet more culture and history. Stroll through the Getreidegasse, discover Mozart’s birth house or do some shopping. In the afternoon you will be give your rental bikes (if booked).

Your bike tour starts in Salzburg. You then head through the shady Salzach lowlands along the river. You cycle to Hallein, which was a rich Celtic city in former times due to its excavation of salt. Hallein impresses with its romantic old city, small alleyways, gates and precious houses. Its main attraction is the popular Celtic museum. Along the river you reach the water fall, the beautiful market square and the fortress dating back to the 13th Century in Golling. If you want to extend your tour you can go for a ride through the romantic valley called Bluntautal.

From Golling you pedal you way up the Lueg pass. Enjoy the views of the beautiful mountains. You will not even notice the slight climb. The mountains are getting closer and the sound of water is getting louder. You pass the so-called “Salzach-Öfen”, an imposing canyon which was built through the river. At the foot of the Hochkönig mountain you reach Werfen. The biggest ice cave in the world is inviting you for a tour through the bewitching world of shimmering ice (total duration about 4 hours). You get a last view of Hohenwerfen fortress before you continue to Bischofshofen. Within a few kilometres you reach St. Johann. We recommend visiting the dome with its towers and the wildly romantic Liechtensteinklamm (gorge).

Fresh and rested you set off on your third stage towards Schwarzach im Pongau. Admire the Schernberg palace before you continue your bike tour. Shortly after leaving Schwarzach you will say goodbye to the river Salzach because you will now cycle along the Gasteiner Ache through the wildly romantic Gastein valley. You now need to recuperate your energy because over the next 2.5 kilometres you have to ascend 130m. Prepare for the sweat to start running. You then cycle through the Klamm tunnel, which is 1.5km long. It has got a segregated bike path running through it. Those who don't want to cycle through the tunnel can skip it by taking the train or a shuttle service. You then cycle via Dorgastein and Bad Hofgastein along lovely paths to the popular winter sport resort, Bad Gastein located at the foot of the Hohen Tauern. This is a lovely place to take a leisurely stroll. A true landmark here is the Gasteiner waterfall located in the centre. Bad Gastein is just a stone's throw away from Böckstein where you will catch a train from to take you to the other side of the Alps or more specifically to Mallnitz. (journey as arranged by you, approx. €5 per person). Back in the saddle you enjoy the descent to your hotel in the Mölltal valley.

You start today cycling along the Möll river past impressive mountain scenery. The Drava valley startsin Möllbrücke and with it the sunny southern Austria! Unhurriedly you cycle the remaining kilometres to Spittel an der Drau. The town was already an important traffic hub in the Middle Ages for pilgrims and it is partially down to this that Spittal gained its wealth. Pay a visit to the Rennaissance palace, which was built in the 16th Century and that has been referred to as the "loveliest piece of Renaissance architecture north of the Alps".

Enjoy this stage! It goes slightly downhill along the river Drava. You should plan a stop in Paternion because there are churches and palaces that are worth-seeing. It isn't long until you reach Villach with its beautiful old city, southern flair and homelike pubs and restaurants.

Unfortunately you have reached the end of your journey! One thing is certain though: you can head home full of new experiences and impressions. Alternatively you could continue cycling from Villach to Triest... the Adriatic coastline is calling!

Tour character

No panic! This bike path leads through flat and slightly hilly terrain, even if the surrounding mountain area is not far away. two longer climbs can be skipped by going by train. You cycle on asphalted roads and nature paths. An about 8 km long descent leads along a road with more traffic.
